stalled at the beginning of
1986 because of a lack of
funds, but $28 million has
been raised since - March to
keep the programs going in
56 neighborhoods, affecting
150,000 people.
Detroiter Dulcie Rosenfeld
gave a presentation on the
fledgling Jewish Information
ServiCe, based at the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Branch of the
Jewish Community Center.
The JIS is part of a growing
network of 12 similiar serv-
ices in the U.S. and Canada,
and delegates discussed keep-
ing the increasingly-mobile
U.S. Jewish community
aware of local federation
services through the network.
The programs vary from De-
troit's information and refer-
ral service to the Ezra Hot-
line in Chicago, which acts as
a crisis intervention service
as well.
Mrs. Rosenfeld said 20 JIS
volunteers handle 200 calls
per month, and do extensive
followup calling to make sure
JIS callers are helped by
other agencies. "We thought
it would be a service for the
elderly," Mrs. Rosenfeld said,
"but we also get many calls
about day care or 'Where do I
go for a Jewish vacation?' "
She described JIS as "warm
and fuzzy," saying volunteer
contact with a peer is abso-
lutely essential. "Recently,
JIS spent several hours plac-
ing an out-of-town person in
contact with lost family in
Detroit" by searching cemet-
ery records for a deceased
family member. "What pro-
fessional organization could
devote that kind of time?"
she asked.
Jonathan Guyer may be
ready for JIS, but he's a few
