utomobile clubs serve
a useful purpose.
Whenever we set out
on a lengthy journey, they
provide us with a road map
on which the route is indi-
cated. They mark the good
highways, the congested
roads, the detours that should
be avoided. In this week's
sidrah, there is a description
of a trip, taken by the first
patriarch Abram. God said:
"Lech Lechah, Go forth, leave
thy country, thy kindred, and
thy father's house ..."
Abram was not given a road
map. He did not even know
where he was going. El ha-
aretz asher areichah, — To
the land that I will show
you." It must have been dif-
ficult to uproot himself from
the ways to which he had be-
come accustomed, but Abram
heeded God's call, and set out
for the new land.
Like Abram, we also live in
a land — not a physical but a
personal land — the land of
our inner self. At some time
in our life, the call comes
"Lech Lechah, go to yourself',
leave the land which you
have been inhabiting. Per-
haps it is time to change your
life style. Try to make a new
beginning. Let us examine
some lands which we inhabit,
and which we ought to aban-
don.
For example, some of us
live in a land of selfishness.
The boundaries of our lives
are named "I, me, my and
mine." These are the people
who believe that "charity be-
gins at home," but it fre-
quently dies due to lack of
outdoor exercise. And yet,
there sometimes comes the
call: "Leave the land of self-
ishness, and migrate to the
land of generosity. Discover
how much joy there is in giv-
ing, rather than getting."
Some of us dwell in the
land of stubbornness. Last
week, a young woman came
to see me. Her marriage is in
trouble. "My husband," she
said, "is stubborn. He always
insists that he is right.
Whenever I express an opin-
ion that differs with his, he
either begins to shout, or he
walks away. I am convinced
that he has a split personal-
ity — and I hate both of
them."
Hopefully, her husband
will mature, and come to
realize that "an obstinate
man does not hold opinions,
but they hold him." Perhaps
someday he will leave the
land of stubbornness and dis-
cover that a person who is
inwardly secure can admit
that his opinions are not et-
ernally correct.
Finally, many of us inhabit

the land of sorrow. There is a
tender and touching story of
a man whose wife died at an
early age, leaving him with a
two-year-old daughter. His
whole life centered around
this child. When she was
nine years old, she contracted
an illness and died. At that
point, his life stopped. He
was inconsolable. He with-
drew from everything and
everyone.
One night he had a dream.
In his dream, he saw a proc-
ession of little children in
heaven. Each child was dres-

sed in white, and each child
was carrying a lit candle. As
he looked closer, he recog-
nized his little girl, but her
candle was not lit.
"Why," he asked her, "why
is your candle extinguished?"
The little girl replied,
"They keep lighting it, daddy,
but your tears keep putting it
out:" --
At that moment, the man
decided that it was time to
leave the land of sorrow, and
journey to "the land of the
living."
People can change. Abram
was 75 years old when the
call came to change the jour-
ney of his life. The Torah
wants to teach us that we are
never too old to change — if
we but have the will.

Israeli Teachers
May Strike
Over Pay

Jerusalem (JTA) — Educa-
tion Minister Yitzhak Navon
and Finance Minister Moshe
Nissim failed last week to
agree how to cover Educa-
tion's deficits, prolonging the
inter-ministerial dispute that
has prompted some teachers
to walk off their jobs for three
days.
Classes were cancelled for
two days for thousands of
children from the third grade
up. On the third day, most
schools were open, although
high schools and junior highs
whose teachers have not been
paid for October were on
strike.
Payment has been delayed
because the Finance Ministry
refuses to transfer $60 million
to Education, claiming the
latter has not implemented
its budget cuts. The Cabinet
is expected to discuss the
issue at its weekly session.
