Sur-Lignon, France,

who
saved an estimated 5,000
Jewish children during the
Holocaust. LeChambon was
represented by Nelly Trocme
Hewett of Milwaukee, daugh-
ter of Pastor and Madame
Andre Trocme, leader of the
Hugenots who quietly hid the
children.
"Our village did not feel
that it was doing anything
special to harbor Jews," said
Mrs. Hewett. "People did
what had to be done." One of
those saved by the villagers,
Jack Lewin of Woodmere,
N.Y., flew to Detroit for Sun-
day's presentation.
A letter from President
Ronald Reagan was read at
the dinner, as was a state se-
nate resolution. Other speak-
ers at the gathering were
dinner chairman Samuel
Frankel, U.S. Senator Carl
Levin, former U.S. Solicitor
General Wade McCree, HMC
board chairman Henry
Dorfman, Jewish Welfare
Federation president Dr.
Conrad Giles, and HMC
executive director Rabbi
Charles Rosenzveig.
Rabbi Rosenzveig drew
parallels between the nuclear
accident at Chernobyl and

the Holocaust, saying that,
like Chernobyl, the ashes
from the Holocaust are still
in the air. The difference, he

said, was that the world of-
fered to put out the fires of
Chernobyl but no one tried to
help the Jews in the
Holocaust.
"Chernobyl revealed a
monster that we have created
but we can not fully control.
The holocaust revealed a
fatal flaw in hunians that
will destroy us if we do not
control it."
He called for an interna-
tional conference of world
leaders to control "the brutal
forces in man unleashed by
the Holocaust" and the nu-
clear arms race. "You can't
do one without the other," he
said.

Petition Drive

The Holocaust Memorial
Center has begun a statewide
petition drive in support of a
bill in the U.S. House of
Representatives that calls for
an investigation of U.S.
policies in letting Nazi war
criminals into the U.S. after
World War II.

At the Shaarey Zedek dinner are David Hermelin, Myron
Milgrom, Leypsa Groner, Irving Laker and Rabbi Irwin
Groner.

Tribute to Gropers
Sets Bonds Record

Cong. Shaarey Zedek began
a year-long observance last
week of its 125th anniversary
with a tribute dinner honor-
ing its rabbi and his wife
that saw $15,684,000 raised
on behalf of State of Israel
Bonds.
This dollar amount from a
single synagogue event is
unprecedented in the Israel
Bond Organization's 35-year
history, declared David
Hermelin, international cam-
paign chairman for Israel
Bonds and .a past president of
Shaarey Zedek.

More than 1,000 guests
participated in the formal
dinner that saw Rabbi Irwin
Groner, elected in 1978 as
the congregation's spiritual
leader for life, and his wife,
Leypsa, presented with the
State of Israel's Peace Medal.
The congregation, one of
the largest in the U.S. with
over 1,800 families, was first
formed in 1861 with a found-
ing membership of 17.
The milestone celebration,
held in the Albert Kahn-
designed synagogue, included
an elaborate cocktail hour
