Friday, October 31, 1986

Jack Waksberg, an active
member of Holocaust sur-
vivors' organizations, died
Oct. 23 at age 80.
A native of Radom, Poland,
Mr. Waksberg lived 38 years
in Detroit, prior to retiring to
Hallandale, Fla.
He was a founder and past
president of the Radomer
Mutural Society and a lead-
ing member of the Shaarit
Haplaytah — Survivors of
1945, of which he was the
permanent honorary
president. For many years he
was the welfare chairman of
the group.
Mr. Waksberg was active
in the Albert Einstein Lodge
of B'nai B'rith and was de-
eply involved in efforts for
the American Red Magen
David for Israel. He was
president of the Cong.
Shaarit Haplaytah High
Holiday services since their
inception and created a tradi-
tional Yom Kippur fund-
raising pledge for the Red
Magen David.
He was actively involved in

and was one of its original
major supporters.
Although he lived his last
years in Florida, he still held
strong ties to the Detroit
Jewish community.
Mr. Waksberg is survived
by his wife, Ida; a son, Dr.
Morry of Los Angeles, Calif.;
and a brother, Louis Klein.

Labor Zionist Leader
Louis Levine Dies

The death of Louis Levine,
on Saturday, leaves a void in
Labor Zionist ranks.
Lifelong associate with
Labor Zionism, Histadrut,
Jewish National Fund and
related causes, he was among
the popular advocates of sup-
port for Israel. For more than
two decades he was among
the most popular Yiddish
speakers, equally appealing
in Hebrew and English.
At public gatherings,
whether for the JNF or Israel
Bonds, he also was a
folksinger and often led in
the singing of popular He-
brew and Yiddish songs.
Mr. Levine was active in
tasks for State of Israel
Bonds and Magen David
Adorn. He was a past
president of the Pinsker Pro-
gressive Aid Society and the
Farband.

Helen Mertz, owner of
Mertz Bake Shop in Oak
Park, died Oct. 25 at age 87.
Born in Poland, Mrs. Mertz
lived in the Detroit area for
49 years.
Mrs. Mertz was a member
of the Jewish National Fund,
American Women for Bar-
Ilan University, Amit
Women, Friends of Akiva
Hebrew Day School, Sinai
Hospital Guild and other
charitable organizations.
She had been honored by
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah.
She is survived by a son,
Leo; a daughter, Mrs. Irving
(Friedel) Davis; six
grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.

In North Miami Beach,
Fla., where he had lived for
the past few years, Mr.
Levine was active in cultural
groups. He was the president
of the Hebrew Culture Group
of Buckley Towers.
In Detroit, he was a
member of the Hebrew Be-
nevolent Society, on whose
board he served since the
1930s. Previously, he was an
active fund raiser for the
HBS.
He is survived by his wife,
Diane; a daughter, Mrs. Irv-
ing (Bina) Young of West
Bloomfield; a brother, Max of
Windsor, Ont.; and three
grandchildren. Interment Is.

Henry Kovaisky

Kovalsky,
Henry
mechanical engineer with
Ford Motor Co. for 25 years,
died Oct. 22.
A graduate of Lawrence In-
stitute of Technology (LIT),
Mr. Kovaisky was a section
supervisor of the rear wheel
drive system and manual
transmission engineering at
Ford.
He was a registered profes-
sional mechanical engineer,
on the board of trustees of
the LIT alumni association
and president of the Model A.
Restoreres Club, Oakland
Region, for the past 15 years.
Mr. Kovalsky was a
member of the Oak Park Post
and Bloch Post of the Jewish
War Veterans.
He leaves his wife, Sheila;
two sons, Mark and Jim; a
daughter, Sharon; a brother,
Milton; and two
grandchildren.
