Ethiopians Face
Troubles In U.S.

SAN FRANCISCO (JTA)
— The employment of local
Ethiopian Jewish immigrants
/-'
has been hindered by racism,
• their own humility and anti-
quated job skills, say social
workers who counsel them.
San Francisco Jewish
Vocational Service executive
director Abby Snay said that
whites with qualifications
like those of the Ethiopian
Jews get jobs while the
Ethiopian Jews do not.
"I believe racism is a per-
vasive force in American cul-
ture which, together with the
Ethiopians' language problem
and the premium now put on
communications skills, can
_) create an insurmountable ob-
stacle," she said.

Survey Out
On Boston Jews

BOSTON (JTA) — The
Jewish community of Greater
Boston increased in popula-
tion by 13 percent from
1975-1985, reaching 228,000,
according to an estimate con-
tained in a demographic sur-
vey released last month by
the Combined Jewish Philan-
thropies.
Even with the increase, the
Boston Jewish community
remains the sixth largest
North American Jewish
community, behind those of
New York, Los Angeles,
Philadelphia, Miami and
Chicago.
The survey also found that
the community is better edu-
cated and lives in a larger
geographic area than in 1975
and, said CJP director of
community planning, Martin
Abramowitz, is "the youngest
Jewish community in
America."
