The mayor said he did not
want to dwell on history and
then showed why,
breathtakingly rewriting it so
he could describe all Israel's
conflicts as "aggressive
wars." Remember how a few
thousand Haganah members
pounced on the Palestinian
Arabs and the armies of five
Arab states in 1948, how Is-

tanks and hundreds of
thousands of troops along the
borders with Egypt, Syria
and Jordan in 1967, and how
it launched the Yom Kippur
surprise attack on Egypt and
Syria in 1973? No? Zayyad
does.
He said that what the West

to acquaint you with my framing studio, Framery One. We are located
in the Downtown Farmington Shopping Center, Grand River at
Farmington Road, between Harmony House and Dagwood's Deli.

I was very fortunate to have worked with Tim Hall, the former
owner of Genius, for five years. I am very much aware of the creativity
and quality to which you were accustomed. I truly feel that Framery

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Saturday "Leonid Volvovsky
Day."
Volvovsky, 44, a computer
engineer, first applied to
leave the Soviet Union for Is-
rael in 1974. Both he and
Ludmilla were then fired
from their jobs.
In 1985, Volvovsky was
sentenced to three years in a
labor camp for slandering the
Soviet state.
The Oak Park congregation
will be further reminded of
Soviet refuseniks and pris-
oners of Zion this Simchat
Torah by their "Russian Sefer
Torah." This Torah scroll was
brought from Soviet Georgia
by a Jew who now lives in
the Detroit area. Beth
Shalom b'nai and b'not
mitzvah read from the scroll
when they are twinned with
a young Soviet Jew.

Friend Receives
`Political' Letter

promise to give you 100% when it comes to quality, creativity and

Yours truly,

Palestinian Arab people" in-
cluding the right to self-
determination and a state.
New agreements with Jordan
or Egypt could not substitute
for an international confer-
ence including the Soviet
Union and the PLO.
Zayyad wildly contradicted
a September report on refu-
gees by the U.S. State De-
partment, claiming that "half
the Palestinian Arab people
are under occupation, suffer-
ing all the atrocities of occu-
pation, and the other half
live in refugee camps."
His press conference
demonstrated one Middle
East truth, however — the
democratic nature of Israel,
unique in the region. One
simply cannot imagine an
Arab (forget Jewish) mayor
from an Arab country bash-
ing his native land the way
Zayyad does Israel.

Ludmilla Volvovsky

Prisoner of Zion Leonid
(Ari) Volvovsky has been
named an honorary resident
of Michigan by Governor
James Blanchard. The gover-
nor's message to Volvovsky
and his wife Ludmilla will be
read at Cong. Beth Shalom
during Simchat Torah serv-
ices Saturday. The congrega-
tion adopted the Volvoskys in
1980. In addition, the city of
Oak Park has declared

A Soviet Jewish immigrant
living in Southfield has re-
ceived a letter from a re-
fusenik friend in Moscow.
Alexander Gopp said that he
has been corresponding with
his friend — whose name
Gopp will not disclose — for
six years, but that this is the
first time one of his friend's
letters has been smuggled out
of the USSR.
Gopp said he was surprised
to receive such a political let-
ter, which reads in part:
Letter dated Aug. 15
"For some time, I am a
member of a trust group, the
independent peace movement
(the full name is the Group
for Establishing Mutual
Trust between USSR and
USA). You could hear about
us, sometimes they speak
about us over radio. Usually
it happens when one of us
