Steven Z. Cohen and Dr.
Zvi Gitelman were recently
installed as president and
chairman of the board, re-
spectively, of Akiva Hebrew
Day School.
Cohen was previously an
Akiva vice president.
A Detroit native, he is a
graduate of the University of
Michigan and of the Wayne
State University Law School.
Cohen is a member of the
board of the Hebrew Free
Loan Association, a past
member of the board of
Young Israel of Greenfield
and legal counsel to the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis of
Greater Detroit.
He also is a member of the
Detroit Bar Association, the
Oakland County Bar Associa-
tion, and served on the Cir-
cuit Committee of the Wayne
County Circuit Court.
Gitelman is a professor of
political science at the Uni-
versity of Michigan. He was
born in New York and earned
A.B., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees
from Columbia University.
A Michigan resident since
1968, Gitelman is a member
of Young Israel of Southfield,
and serves on the Detroit
Area Committee for Soviet
Jewry, the Michigan Advi-
sory Board of the Anti-
Defamation League, the
board of directors and faculty
of Midrasha College of
Jewish Studies, the board of
overseers of the Tauber Insti-
tute of Brandeis University,
is a consultant to the Memo-
rial Foundation for Jewish
Culture and to the YIVO In-
stitute for Jewish Studies,
