OSI Seeks
Vilna Witnesses

New York — The U.S. De-
partment of Justice has re-
quested the assistance of the
World Jewish Congress in
locating witnesses to Nazi
crimes committed during
World War II in the vicinity
of Vilna (Vilnius), Lithuania.
In addition to Vilna itself,
survivors are being sought
from the following towns and
villages: Nemenczyn (Nemen-
cine), Nova Vileika (Naujoji
Vilnia), Rzesza (Riese), Yas-
zuny (Jasiunai), Eiszyszki
(Eisiskes), Troki (Trakai),
Szumiliszki (Semeliskes), and
Svienciany (Svencionys).
The department's Office of
Special Investigations (OSI)
is in the process of gathering
evidence in connection with
its investigations of suspected
Nazi war criminals residing
in the United States.
OSI is especially interested
in contacting survivors who
can provide information con-
cerning the activities of the
Lithuanian Security Police
(also known as the Lithua-
nian Sicherheitspolizei,
Saugumas, or Lithuanian
SIPO).
Survivors, or those who
might be of assistance in
locating survivors, may write
in any language: Bessy
Pupko, World Jewish Con-
gress, 1 Park Ave., New
York, N.Y. 10016, Telephone:
(212) 679-0600.

Demography
Studied

New York — American
Jews have become users
rather than members of
Jewish Community Centers
and YM-YWHAs, Dr. Gary
A. Tobin of Brandeis Univer-
sity told a meeting of the
JWB board of directors.
Basing his contention on
data developed in demog-
raphic studies,Dr. Tobin
found that Center con-
stituents today care primarily
about service, not member-
ship.
While most American Jews
prefer to use a JCC or Y over
private services, he noted,
membership can turn over
100 percent in any given
five-year period.
