lot, he said he felt it wouldn't
be fair to leave a family
home, nor would it be feasi-
ble to take a family on the
road. His work schedule pre-
vents any active affiliation
with Jewish organizations,
but he has helped out the
City of Hope and adds, "I do
have my trees in Israel."
After Detroit, Kessler goes
to Chicago to do The Merry
Widow with the Lyric Opera.
He then returns to his Los
Angeles home where he will
begin work on a new Mel
Brooks movie, tentatively ti-
tled Space Balls, a parody of
the old Star Trek TV series.
Kessler has a special fond-
ness for Brooks. Although
movie audiences may think of
the filmmmaker as being off
center, Kessler said that
that's really Brooks' method
for creating his popular com-
edies.
"He really is a genius. He
sees the world from a coc-
keyed angle which is why ev-
erything he does is funny. I
think that's comic genius. I
really do because he makes
you see what he sees and
that's why you laugh at it,
because you're seeing famil-
iar things in a way that you
wouldn't with other people
pointing them out. That's
what comedy is."
Asked where Brooks gets
his ideas for his films, Kes-
sler was unsure. "Who
knows? From Pluto!"
He recalled a couple of
Brooks antics perpetrated
during the filming of To Be
Or Not To Be. Kessler said
that on the lot where all the
actors had their dressing
trailers, Brooks and his wife,
actress Anne Bancroft de-
clined to use their own names
on their trailers, choosing in-
stead to label them "Fred-
erick and Anna Bronsky."
Nobody at the 20th Century
Fox studio knew who the
Bronskys were. After eight
weeks, the studio executives
finally figured out the trail-
ers belonged to Brooks and
Bancroft.
One day while shooting the
film, in which actors were
dressed in Nazi-like uni-
forms, Brooks called a lunch
break. It came about five
minutes before the studio
commissary closed. About ten
actors, including Brooks,
dressed in the Nazi regalia,
burst into the dining room
much to the surprise of the
diners. Kessler recalled the
scene:
"Everybody in the commis-
sary 'died.' They looked like
`God, they've come for us.' It
was very funny. They finally
calmed down. We got a table
and sat down and everything
would've been fine except all
the Mexican busboys insisted
on saluting us."
Kessler said a stunt like
that is typical of Brooks. But
as a director he can be really
tough.
"Mel is like the little girl
