Brig. Gen. (Res.) Yehudah
Halevy, world president and
chief executive officer of the
State of Israel Bond Organ-
ization, will meet with the
leadership of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek at a cocktail reception
scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednes-
day.
The event will be held in
the Birmingham home of
David B. Hermelin, interna-
tional campaign chairman for
Israel Bonds and past
president of Shaarey Zedek,
and his wife, Doreen, a na-
tional officer and past local
chairman of the Israel Bonds
Women's Division.
The reception will be a pre-
lude to a special Shaarey
Zedek Israel Bond tribute
dinner on Nov. 5 honoring
Rabbi Irwin and Leypsa
Groner, the congregation's

General Halevy served in
Israel's Defense Forces for 27
years. Halevy, who rose from
the ranks to become a
brigadier general, fought in
all of Israel's wars since
1956. In the Six-Day War of
1967, he was with the elite
Seventh:Brigade, the first
unit to reach the Suez Canal.
In the Yom Kippur War in
1973, he served in the Sinai
Desert. He held a series of
command and staff positions
in the Armored Corps, the
Southern command and the
Manpower Division.
In late 1982, the govern-
ment of Israel asked him to
undertake the responsibility
of heading the world-wide Is-
rael Bond Organization.
Under his leadership, the
Bond Organization's markets
were expanded considerably
and a record $505 million in
Israel Bonds were sold in
1985. New financial instru-
ments were developed and
Halevy built a new infras-
tructure of young Bond lead-
ers.
More recently, he has in-
volved the Bond Organization
in the effort to expand
tourism to Israel as Israel

ation Independence," the in-
