Arabs Convicted
For Murder
Of Soldier
.
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
military court in Lod last
week sentenced two Israeli
Arabs for life for the murders
of soldier Moshe Tamara, in
August, 1984.
The convicts are Ibrahim
Razek Bayadsi, 26, and
Ibrahim Nayef Abu Moh, 25,
both residents of the village
of Baka El Gharbiya, near
Hadera.
The trial was conducted
under tight security, with
hundreds of soldiers and
police guarding the military
court, after relatives of the
dead soldiers — and a number
of Kach supporters. — threat-
ened to attack the defend-
ants.
The defendants pleaded
guilty, but justified their act,
saying it was a political act.
Two other men denied the
charges and will be tried later.
The four were arrested last
March. They killed Tamam in
August, 1984, under orders
from the Popular Front for
the Liberation of Palestine, to
kidnap a soldier, transfer him
to Syria, to exchange him for
Palestinian terrorists jailed in
Israel. They kept Tamam for
two days in a house near their
village, before shooting him in
an olive grove near Jenine,
because they had trouble
transferring him to Syria.
Kach Activist
Sentenced
To Prison
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Jerusalem District Court last
week sentenced Kach activist
Craig Leitner to 30 months in
prison for a series of attacks
against Arabs.
Leitner, 24, was found guil-
ty of taking part in a 1983
shooting attack in Ramallah
by Kach members against an
Arab bus in which six Arab
workers were wounded. He
also was convicted of setting
fire to Arab-owned cars in
Hebron and East Jerusalem,
of throwing gasoline bombs
at the Al-Fajr newspaper of-
fices in East Jerusalem and
at a home in the Shuafat
refugee camp in northern
Jerusalem.
Leitner had spent 13
months in jail awaiting his
trial before he agreed to turn
state's witness in the trial of
his accomplices. However,
shortly before the trial he fled
for the U.S. Following a plea
bargain in which he pleaded
guilty to all the charges
against him, he agreed to
return voluntarily from the
U.S. last month without ex-
tradition. His former im-
prisonment period will be
subtracted from the new
sentence, and he will not be
charged for having fled to the
U.S.
