Denim
Continued from Page 135
most kids prefer. Denim is
even being torn on purpose.
Basic denim is the bread
and butter fabric for jeans but
having stepped into the fashion
spotlight, the more sophisti-
cated versions come into focus
and increase the demand:
denim takes to color like a
duck to water, printed denim
adds dimension, textured
denim is very graphic.
Corduroy has always been
an important back-to-school
fabric. It's durable yet dressy,
especially in the new prints
that give it an added dimen-
sion. The wales are wider,
there's thick 'n thin and a new
rayon blend with an iridescent
shine and soft hand. It looks
especially good in hot, metallic
colors and in black and gold
print floral tapestry looks. Lots
of solid colors and even stretch
corduroy for comfort. Stripes
are hot, too.
Color has exploded on the
jeans scene. Bold primary col-
ors like chrome yellow and tur-
quoise are making a big
splash. Brights accent black or
indigo and pastels work with
grey. There are patriotic com-
binations of red, white and
bright blue. The brights work
very well in combination or
tone on tone. Black and grey
denim have achieved signifi-
cant stature in the youth
market.
Along with the worn, torn
and faded looks in fashion to-
day comes the renewed popu-
larity of recycled jeans. Some
people love old, broken-in
jeans and search endlessly for
used jeans. Recycled jeans are
staple items in most vintage
clothing stores. And, believe it
or not, they're in short supply
because of the growing popu-
larity of recycled denim in
other countries.
The hottest trend of all is
jeans with holes worn into the
pockets, derriere and knees. If
it hasn't happened by accident
manufacturers are doing it
