LOOKING FOR A
SPECIAL PLACE

TO HAVE YOUR NEXT PARTY?

O

a fabric design in such good
taste.
Without Chef Remy Berdy
there it now might be classed
as a baseball team' without
its ace pitcher ... or a foot-
ball team without its
frontline quarterback ... But
Jacques has completely
covered the situation with a
backup squad next to few ...
It cannot be called the second
team because Jacques
kitchen members are part of
Remy's first lineup ... How-
ever, the important thing is
- that he is molding a squad
that is available for all con-
tingencies ... whether he is
there or not ... and this is so
very, very important.
Also, soon will be an all-
new menu at Jacques ...
Many items, I understand,
have never been prepared in
this area before.
> •
There is a difference now
at Jacques ... so much for
the better.
THE SCOOP that re-
staurateur Chuck Muer
promised local media people
recently at his Fairlane
Charley's press briefing,
turned out to be a scoop of ice
cream on Michigan Cherry
Pie ... one of 28 items he
had through August on a
special M-M-M-Michigan
Menu in 11 of his Charley's,
Diggers and Meriwether res-
taurants ... Kickoff was
Chuck's promotion of famous
Michigan fish and agricul-
tural products.
RIKKI'S will open in Oc-
tober at American Motors
Bldg. on Franklin ... former
Merrick's locale ... Bookings
are already being taken for
its private banquet areas up
to 175 persons ... Owners of
Rikki's are bossfolks of the
very popular Panache in
Birmingham taking over
former Archibald's site and
making it the place to be at.
WORLD PREMIERE of
new musical, Into The Light,
starring Dean Jones of stage
and TV, opens for a four-
month pre-Broadway
engagement, Sept. 6 Oct. 4
... The Fisher Theater, scene
of pre-Broadway openings of
Hello Dolly and Fiddler on.
The Roof, among others, once
again throbs with the ex-
citement of music and lyrics
seldom heard before and a
story to touch the heart and
mind ... In addition, this
production reaches into the
21st Century with lighting
and laser technology startling
in its innovation, power and
beauty ... Into The Light
will open on Broadway, Oct.
15 ... at the Neil Simon
Theatre.
Ed HERSCH of Hersch's
Lawn Spray, went into the
new A & W Restaurant on
Southfield with girl friend
Julie Siegel ... He Jokingly
asked, "Is Mr. Taubman cook-
ing today?" ... She said, "We
go by first names only ...
e and Ed told the lass it was Al
... The gal yelled to her
cook, "Is Al back there?" ...

No response ... She asked for
last name ... and if he was
one of the cooks there ... She
came back and said, "No, Al
Taubman is not working to-
night." (He is owner of the
new chain.)
D. DENNISON'S SEA-
FOOD Tavern, Orchard Lake
Rd., has a double-header ...
through Oct. 31 ... Imagine
two lobsters for the price of
one! ... Can't remember if
I've seen two lobster dinners
for the price of one before ...
Price of lobster is so high for
restaurateurs . . . . don't
know how D. Dennison's is
doing it.
EVER TASTE SYLVIA
LEE'S apricot poundcake?
... The pastry queen is sell-
ing them like mad from her
new kitchen (store) on Ten
Mile, west of Telegraph.
Those monster muffins,
tortes and gourmet robust
breads are winners, too ...
Pastries by Sylvia Lee is cer-
tified kosher.
SPECTACULAR IN-
TERNATIONAL touring
company of • the Tony
Award-winning musical
Dreamgirls which opens a
four-week engagement Sept.
16 at Masonic Temple, has
been doing sold-out business
across the country.
The same production will
be seen in Japan a month
after it leaves Detroit.
SOMETHING A LITTLE
different for the birthday of
Frank Passalacqua, owner of
Mario's Restaurant on Second
Ave.
Claudia Abel, Frank's fian-
cee thought about something
with a twist . . . After all,
what do you get a man who
has everything but a Ferrari?
... How about 1,000 balloons,
Ten at a time ... with twists
at the end.
The birthday festivities
started at about 11:30 a.m.
... when the national cham-
pionship Lakeview Varsity
cheerleaders from St. Clair
Shores started out his birth-
day surprise by delivering to
Frank 1,000 balloons ... Ten
at a time . . . As one girl
would deliver a bunch, the
next cluster was on its way.
"Happy Birthday, Frank,
from Claudia" was told each
time ... The girls were also
instructed to hand the bal-
loons only to Frank and no
one else ... If he wasn't there
or busy ... wait.
After the luncheon crowd
finally caught on to the cele-
bration, one of Mario's reg-
ular customers, Greg Ander-
son, led the entire dining
room in two verses of happy
birthday to Frank.
The Lakeview Varsity
Cheerleaders did the birthday
surprise mainly as a fund
raiser to help get themselves
to the USC Grand National
Championships ... Frank's
fiancee, Claudia, being an
ex-Lakeview Varsity cheer-
leader herself, understood
how difficult it is for those
young girls to raise enough

money to compete in the
Lansing competition.
It took four hours of steady
balloon delivery ... but final-
ly,after the whole bar was
covered with 1,000 balloons,
from every color of the spec-
trum, the Lakeview Varsity
cheerleaders lined themselves
up and with prestige, gave
Frank a personal birthday
cheer ... They echoed
through the entire dining
room ... "We Wish A Ver-y
Ha-ppy Birth-day To You!"
(clap, clap, clap).
After the balloons, Frank
and Claudia were whisked
away for a superb dinner at
Chez Raphael's in Novi, and
some delectable surprises ...
Every customer got to walk
out with a bouquet of beauti-
ful balloons for Frank
Passalacqua's birthday.
