Tom Turner, president of
the Metropolitan Detroit
AFL-CIO, will receive the
"Tree of Life" Award from
the Jewish National Fund at
a dinner in his Honor on Oct.
15, announced Owen Bieber,
president, United Auto
Workers; Sam Fishman,
president, Michigan State
AFL-CIO; Theodore Sachs,
Partner in the law firm of
Sachs, Nunn, Kates,
Kadushin, O'Hare, Helveston
and Waldman; Roger B.
Smith, chairman of the
board, General Motors Corp.;
and Alfred S. Warren, vice
president of industrial rela-
tions, General Motors Corp.;
co-chairmen of the dinner.
The Jewish National
Fund's highest honor, the
Tree of Life Award, is a
humanitarian award. It is
given in recognition of out-
standing community in-
volvement and dedication to
the cause of American-Israeli
friendship and devotion to
peace and the security of
human life.
Serving as honorary co-
chairmen for the dinner are:
Gov. James J. Blanchard and
Dean E. Richardson of Man-
ufacturer's National Bank,
former Tree of Life recipients.
Turner began his career in
the labor movement at Great
Lakes Steel Corp. and be-
came a member of Local
Union 1299 of the United
Steelworkers of America. In
1963, he was appointed di-
visional grievance man in the
electrical department. In
1964, he was appointed to the
staff of District 29, United
Steelworkers of America. In
1965, he was appointed ad-
ministrative assistant to the
late Al Barbour, president of
the Wayne County AFL-CIO.
He was elected vice
president of the Wayne
County AFL-CIO in 1967 and
in 1968, he was elected by
the executive board of Wayne
County AFL-CIO as
president. In 1969, Oakland
and Macomb Counties
merged with Wayne and he
was elected by the convention
as president of the merged
Metropolitan Detroit AFL-
CIO. In 1972 and 1976, he
was re-elected president of
the Metropolitan Detroit
AFL-CIO Council.
Turner serves on 38 boards,
commissions and committees
appointed by the President of
the United States, Governor
of the State of Michigan,
mayors of municipalities and
county commissioners. He
also is a member of the Na-
tional Board of Directors
NAACP, and a member of
the Jewish Labor Committee.
The proceeds from the
dinner will be utilized to es-
tablish the Thomas Turner
Forest of 10,000 trees to be
located in the American In-
dependence Park near
Jerusalem.

plaque honoring Past
President Max Kushner "for
his many years of devoted
and selfless service to Cres-
cent Shrine and crippled and
burned children," and
