Reform College
Begins Classes..

Twenty-six classes will be
offered when the College of
Jewish Studies begins its fall
semester Sept. 17.
The college is the official
adult education project for all
the Reform congregations of
Metropolitan Detroit. The
courses are open to any adult
whether a temple member or
not.

According to Cantor Nor-
man Rose, Dean of the Col-
lege, this marks the 20th
year of the College of Jewish
Studies. Classes are taught
by rabbis, cantors, educators,
and other professionals. in the
field of Jewish education.
Courses include: Beginner,
Intermediate and Conversa-
tional Hebrew; A History of
Reform Judaism; Raising a
Jewish Child; Book of
Genesis and Exodus;
Apocalyptic Themes in
Jewish Literature; Midrash
and Mishnah; Introduction to
Judaism; Jewish View of
.God; Rabbinic Responsa to
Modern Jewish • Problems;
Understanding the Bible
Through Archaeology;. Mod-
ern Jewish History; Judaism
and Islam; Jews in Exotic
Lands; Holocaust; Jewish
- Backgrounds to Christianity;
The Trial of Jesus; and Is-
raeli Dancing.
Courses especially designed
for religious school teachers,
but open to anyone include:
Methodology for Grades
three-ten; Reform Jewish Life
Cycle; and Classroom. Mari
agement.
Courses entitled Introduc-
tion to Judaism are open. to
anyone, but are specifically
designed to meet the needs of
prospective converts to
Judaism.
• For the firth year, the col-
lege is working closely with
the Midrasha College of
Jewish Studies.
Classes will meet at Tem-
ple Beth El for 12 Wednesday
evenings and_ these is a nom-,
inal tuition charge. Registra-
tion for classes will take
. 'place. at Temple Beth El on
Sept. 16 from 7:30 till 9 p.m.
A course in Rabbinic Re-
spons-a to Modern Jewish
Problems will also be taught
by Sonia Syme on Thursdays
at 12:30 p.m. at Temple Beth
•El beginning Sept. 18.

The Troy Jewish Congrega-
tion will sponsor an outreach
weekend for intermarried
couples Sept. 12-14.
The weekend activities, to
be held at the Lutheran
Church of the Master, 3333
Coolidge, Troy, will include
Sabbath services at 7:45 p.m.
Sept. 12, conducted by the
synagogue's board of trustees.
Kathy Cohn, regional coor-

dinator of the outreach pro-
gram of the Union of Ameri-
can Hebrew Congregations,
will deliver a sermon on
"What Outreach Is and Is
Not."
At 10 a.m. Sept. 13, Mrs.
Cohn will lead a workshop
entitled, "Once Upon a Time:
Intermarriage Before and
After Outreach." The work-
shop is open to all intermar-
ried couples or anyone who
would like to become more
knowledgeable about the is-
sues facing interfaith mar-
riages. A pot-luck dinner for
all intermarried couples will
be held Sept. 13.
The weekend will conclude
Sept. 14 with a youth discus-
sion group. For information
about the weekend, call

Beth El Holding
Service, Dinner

Temple Beth El will hold a
family vesper service and
dinner at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 19.
in the temple courtyard,
weather permitting. This will
be the first of several
family-orientated Sabbath
evenings to be held during
the coming year.
The evening is being coor-
dinated by the temple pro-
gram committee and chaired
.by George Stern and Shelly
Fogelman. There is a charge.
Reservations and payment
must be received by Sept. 12.

SZ Seniors Plan
To Hear - Lecture

Shaarey Zedek Seniors will
meet at 1 p.m. Sunday in the
adult chapel of the

synagogue.
Prof. Zvi Gitelman, profes-
sor of political science at the
University of Michigan, will
speak on "What's In a Name
— A Discussion of Jewish
Roots."
The public is invited free of
charge.

Braille Volunteert
Meeting Slated

Tri-County Braille Volun-
teers will have their fall
meeting at noon Sept. 17 at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek, an-
nounces Mrs. Louis Barden,
president.
Luncheon will be served.
The Shaarey Zedek Sister-
hood will host the meeting.
The Braille transcription
class of the combined sister-
hoods will be held Sept. 23 at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek, under
the direction of Mrs. Dorothy
Girer.
