Robert Mayer Evans

Robert Mayer Evans, vete-
ran newsman and film-
maker, will speak at the
Cong. Beth Shalom Tribute
Dinner, 6 p.m. Thursday.
Sheldon L. Miller, lawyer and
co-chairman of the Metro De-
troit Israel Bonds attorneys
division, will be honored at
the event.
Evans has lived and
worked in several dozen
countries spread over five
continents. He is a former
CBS News foreign correspon
dent and CBS News bureau
chief in Moscow. He has
worked in Europe, Persian
Gulf states and has traveled
in Israel, Egypt and Lebanon
covering wars as well as
peace negotiations.
In the Middle East, he met
the late Anwar Sadat of
Egypt, King Hussein of Jor-
dan, the late Shah of Iran,
the Saudi Arabian foreign
minister and the Saudi
minister of petroleum, and
PLO leaders at their former
headquarters in Beirut. In Is-
rael he has met cabinet
ministers and every Israeli
prime minister for more than
two decades.
Evans has a degree from
the University of North
Carolina, a Master of Juris-
prudence degree from Oxford
University, England,
Doc-
tor of Jurisprudence degree
from Yale Law School, and a
certificate in Chinese from
Yale. He entered broadcast-
ing by working for the late
Edward R. Murrow at CBS
News.
