Laker To Chair
Balfour Concert

Irving Laker

Irving Laker, civic and
community leader, has been
named general chairman of
the 53rd annual Balfour Cel-
ebration and Concert spon-
sored by the Zionist Organ-
ization of America, Met-
ropolitan Detroit District, it
was announced by Sherwin
Tukel, president.
The Balfour Celebration
and Concert are scheduled for
Nov. 2 at the Ford Au-
ditorium.
A graduate of the Univer-
sity of Michigan, Laker is
second vice president of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, a member of
ZOA's national executive
committee and a trustee of
the Jewish Agency for Israel.
His communal activities
and affiliations include mem-
bership on the board of gov-
ernors of the Jewish Welfare
Federation, Sinai Hospital
Board of Directors, the
Jewish Vocational Service,
B'nai B'rith Foundation, He-
brew Benevolent Society, the
Jewish Home for Aged,
Chabad Lubavitch organiza-
tion and the Pinsker Pro-
gressive Aid Society.
Laker has chaired dinners
on behalf of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund, State of Israel
Bonds and Bar Ilan Univer-
sity and has been the reci-
pient of tributes and awards
from major organizations and
institutions.
He is a member of the
State of Israel Bonds' Prime
Minister's Club and the
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall
of Fame Committee. He is a
former president of Metro De-
troit ZOA and board member
of the National Federation of
Jewish Men's Clubs, the
Holocaust Memorial Center
and the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign.

Senior Center
Holds Open House

The Southfield Senior
Adult Center will sponsor an
open house and ice cream so-
cial to introduce the center's
fall lineup of classes, 1 p.m.
Tuesday, at the center, 24350
Civic Center Drive. There is
