president Alfred L. Deutsch,
Maxwell Jospey, Mandell L.
Berman, Merle Harris, Mark
Schlussel, current Sinat.i
president Robert A. Steinberg,
Bruce Thal and Federation
president Joel Tauber.
Responding to White's con-
cern that the new structure
will not reflect low-income
patients, women and
minorities, Steinberg said the
new structure will continue to
be run by members of the
Jewish community and that
the hospital board will con-
tinue to have women and
minority representation.
Deutsch said that criticism
was first voiced three years ago
when Sinai's board began pur-
suing the idea of a holding
company. But, he said, "the
same people who are active on
Sinai's board now are the same
people who are running the
holding company . . . We value
our ties to the Jewish commu-
nity and we will continue to
keep Sinai a Jewish hospital.
No one is trying to wrest con-
trol."
Deutsch echoed Shapiro in
saying that Sinai is "one of the
last recognized hospitals in the
city to make this change."
Others who have switched to
the holding company format,
according to Shapiro, include
the Sisters of Mercy, Henry
Ford Hospital and the Detroit
Medical Center.

Mormon Center
Controversy
Appears Over

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
long controversy over the con-
struction of the Mormon
Brigham Young University
here seems to be over. The
ministerial committee which
was appointed eight months
ago to deal with the problem
last Monday accepted the
opinion of Deputy Attorney
General Yoram Bar-Sella that
there is no legal way to halt
the construction, which is
now in an advanced stage.
A proposal by Interior
Minister Yitzhak Peretz to
stop the construction in spite
of Bar-Sella's opinion was re-
jected by the ministerial com-
mittee by a vote of five to
three. Dr. Yosef Burg, Min-
ister of Religious Affairs, and
Yosef Shapira, Minister With-
out Portfolio, voted with
Peretz.
The committee, however, in-
structed the Israel Land
Authority to amend the
university's lease of the land
on which the campus is being
built to include an explicit
commitment by the univer-
sity not to engage in any mis-
sionary activities. The univer-
sity officials states several
times in the past that they
were willing to do so.
