Martin Buber
a genuine and just commu-
nity on a voluntary basis."
Such activity will show the
world the possibility of bas-
ing social justice upon volun-
tary action."
While stressing the Zionist
demand for the self-
determination of the Jewish
community, Buber em-
phasized that "independence
of one's own must not be
gained at the expense of an-
other's independence." The
command of justice refers to
"the future of this country as
a whole." Jewish immigration
shall in no way violate "the
fundamental rights of the
Arab people." The demand
for autonomy `xdoes not ...
necessarily lead to the de-
mand of a 'Jewish
State.' " Robert Weltsch
calls Buber's statement "the
last battle before retreat of
the non-political, spiritual
Zionism." In November 1947,
the United Nations decided to
partition Palestine, a solution
which Buber considered un-
fortunate. On May 14, 1948,
Israel proclaimed its exist-
ence as a sovereign state. The
realist in Buber "accepted"
the state; now the spirit had
to be served from this new
basis.
"Martin Buber on Zion" con-
tains the spiritual legacies in-
corporated in Buber's writings.
His Chassidic devotions are re-
flected in several of the essays,
such as the one on Rabbi
Nahman of Brazlavi the Book of
the Zohar, the Kusari, and re-
lated subjects.
It is in dealing with the
"Zionist Idea" that Buber
covered a vast field. The lecture
on Moses Hess is vital to the
interest stimulated by Buber.
The roles of Ahad HaAm, Chief
Rabbi Kook, Leon Pinsker,
Theodor Herzl and A.D. Gordon
revive the deepest interest in
Zionism.
As Glatzer admonishes in his
introductory comments, Buber's
constant references to Israel
were not about the State of Is-
rael. It had not yet emerged. It
was about the centrality of the
People Israel. His thoughts are
dramatically displayed in an
essay entitled "The Zionist Idea:
The Pressing Demand of the
Hour, Pinsker and Herzl":
Why can Zion be built only
in Palestine? Because it is the
structure hidden in the mate-
rial of this land to the perfec-
tion of which this people can
bring this land if it allows it-
self to be perfected by it: Zion
means a destiny of mutual
perfecting. It is not a calcula-
tion but a command; not an
idea but a hidden figure wait-
ing to be revealed. Israel
would lose its own self if it
replaced Palestine by- an-
other land and it would lose
its own self if it replaced Zion
by Palestine.
Martin Buber left thoughts
and ideas that have found roots
in Zionist literature and Jewish
history. The "Martin Buber on
Zion" volume therefore has
merit as a textbook not to be ig-
nored in dealng with the history
of the movement that gave rise
to the rebuilding of the State of
Israel.
Glatzer Classic:
`Loves Of Kafka'
Nahum Glatzer
Dr. Nahum Glatzer enriches
Jewish literary criticism with a
discussion of some of the works
of Franz Kafka.
In The Loves of Franz Kafka'
(Schocken) Kafka's loves with
two actresses of the Yiddish
theater, his engagement to
Felice Bauer, his letters to his
father, are among the experi-
ences reviewed. Glatzer's in-
teresting literary criticism is
even more an analytical com-
mentary on Kafka and the
Glatzer volume must be viewed
as an enrichment of the con-
stantly growing Franz Kafka
bookshelf. The interest in the
famous author is reaching uni-
versal status.
Speaker Named
Washington D.C. — U.S. Am-
bassador to the United Nations
Vernon Walters will address
B'nai B'rith International at the
Jewish service organization's
convention in Las Vegas on
Aug. 26.
