Agency Votes
To Curb Funds
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Jewish Agency will no longer
fund non-Zionist Haredi educa-
tional institutions in Israel and
overseas, the concluding session
of the Jewish Agency Assembly
decided last week.
According to the resolution,
the Jewish Agency from now on
will transfer funds to Jewish
schools, yeshivot and other in-
stitutions, "which recognize the
State of Israel, support its exist-
ence as the national homeland
of the Jewish people," and inte-
grate Zionist values in their
study programs.
The Mizrahi delegates to the
Assembly tried to oppose the
resolution, but eventually it was
approved by a wide majority.
However, Rabbi Yitzhak Meir,
head of the Torah education de-
partment, said he would appeal
the resolution before the Zionist
Executive, terming the resolu-
tion "irresponsible and not oper-
ational."
According to Meir, it was un-
acceptable that an institution,
in which only 50 percent of its
members are Zionists, would de-
\ termine the criteria for Zionism.
