Israel, Others Barred
From Goodwill Games

New York (JTA) — Israel,
South Korea and South Africa
have been barred from par-
ticipating in the opening
ceremonies and sports competi-
tion of the Goodwill Games
which began in Moscow last
Saturday, according to an of-
ficial for the 'Ilirner Broad-
casting System.
The official, Jim 'frahey, a
TBS vice president for sales and
one of the principal spokesmen
for the Goodwill Games, said
that the Soviet government,
which is co-sponsoring the
Games with TBS, insisted on
the exclusion of the three
countries.
Another TBS spokesman in
Atlanta, Alex Swan, said that
both Israel and South Korea
would be participating in the
world basketball championships
in Spain which coincide with the
Goodwill Games in Moscow.

New York — "The First In-

Friends of the Hebrew Univer-
sity will take place at the Cen-•
tury Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles
Sept. 17-21, announced national
co-chairman Erwin C. Ziegel-
man of Detroit.
• Barbra Streisand is honorary
chairperson. Other stars slated
to participate include Gregory
Peck, Frank Sinatra, Steve
Lawrence, Vidal Sassoon, Steve

rights to the basketball champ-
ionships and has incorporated it
into the Goodwill Games broad-
cast, Trahey said.
Although the basketball corn-
petition in Spain is the "official"
basketball event for the Good-
will Games, South Korea and
Israel have not been invited to
the opening ceremonies in
Moscow.
All other countries repre-
sented in the 18 sports events
have received invitations to
those opening ceremonies,
Trahey said. The basketball
championships were not planned
as part of the Goodwill Games
and the invitation to Israel to
participate did not come from
the Goodwill Games' sponsors.

AJC Suspends
Tours To
Austria

New York (JTA) — The Amer-
ican Jewish Congress last week
announced that it is suspending
all tours to Austria, saying the
election of Kurt Waldheim as
President "has made it impos-
sible to feel comfortable in that
country"
"We have taken this action
...because it reflects our dismay
that a majority of Austrians
should have made the dismal
choice of electing Waldheim
despite the revelations of his
Nazi wartime record and his
unrepentant efforts both to sup-
press the truth and to justify his
action," the AJC said.
This year, Austria was sched-
uled as a major stop on 14 AJC
tours.
