Knesset Hits
Convert Rule

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Knesset reacted with almost
unanimous revulsion Monday to
the proposal by the Orthodox-
controlled Interior Ministry to
print the word "convert" next to
the designation "Jewish" on the
identity cards of immigrants to
Israel who have undergone con-
version abroad.
Five agenda motions denounc-
ing the proposal were sent to
committee after a heated debate
during which the Labor Party
and several leftist parties
argued that it was a breach of
the basic human rights of the
converts.
The religious parties, except
for Shas which is headed by
Interior Minister Yitzhak Peretz
and the far rightwing Tehiya
Party, opposed the move. Peretz
defended it on grounds that the
denotation "convert" was a
badge of honor inasmuch as
Halachah encourages Jews to
honor converts.
Peretz stressed that the pro-
posal has not been implemented.
It is awaiting a ruling by the
Supreme Court in the case of an
American woman convert to
Judaism whom the Interior
Ministry refused to register as
Jewish because she was con-
verted by a Reform rabbi in the
U.S. The woman refused to
undergo Orthodox conversion
rites in Israel and brought legal
action against the ministry.
Peretz's move is widely seen
as an attempt to implement by
administrative means the
Orthodox-inspired "Who is a
Jew" amendment to the Law of
Return which 'has been re-
peatedly voted down by the
Knesset. The amendment would
effectively exclude converts from
automatic Israeli citizenship if
they were converted by Reform
or Conservative rabbis.

New York — The Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith has criticized the Na-
tional Broadcasting Company
for interviewing Palestinian ter-
rorist Mohammed Abbas. Giving
terrorists an opportunity to es-
pouse their causes, the agency
said, "further encourages them
to continue their acts of vio-
lence."
In a letter to Grant A. Tinker,
chairman of NBC, Nathan
Perlmutter, ADL's national di-
rector, noted that NBC in the
Abbas case had "gone signific-
antly beyond informing its vie-
wers" to "unwittingly, become
an aide to him. Unlike other
criminals where attention is a
byproduct of the crime, for ter-
rorists it is a motivation for the
crime."
Perlmutter concluded, "The
issue is not so much censorship
as it is responsibility."
