Quintet and the Warren Sym-
phony Brass Quintet in the
Kresge Court or the. Ventura
String Quartet and Grand Rapids
Symphony Brass Quintet. Follow-
ing, delegates were invited to tour
specially designated galleries in
the DIA.
Another highlight of the con-
vention was the presentation of
awards. The Gold Baton award
"for exemplary patronage of
American composers and Ameri-
can music went to three individu-
als, among them Paul Fromm of
Chicago, whose Fromm Music
Foundation has commissioned
more than 160 composers since its
inception in 1952. The foundation
sponsored the Tanglewood Festi-
val of Contemporary Music and
new music performances, record- ,/
ings, publications and seminars.
Joseph Leavitt, executive vice
president and general manager of
the Philharmonic Orchestra of
Florida, received the ASOL's
Louis Sudler Award, which hon-
ors "an individual for his or her
distinguished service to the pro- <
fession of symphony orchestra
management." Murray Gross,
music director of the West Shore
(Mich.) Symphony Orchestra re-
ceived the league's Helen M.
Thompson Award for a young <
music director. The American
Society of Composers, Authors <
and Publishers (ASCAP) gave
awards to orchestras, large and
small, "for adventuresome pro-
gramming of contemporary
music."
Hosted by the DSO and funded
with grants from the AT and T
Foundation, Ford Motor Co., Gen-
eral Motors, RCA and Bell Atlan-
tic, the Detroit conference took
nearly four years to plan. Accord-
ing to Barbara Tucker, Detroit
liaison and a member of the ASOL
board, more than 200 volunteers
were enlisted to help out at the c/
event. Most were involved in col-
lating, decorating banquet tables
and at the registration desk.
Many of the conference ar-
rangements were made with the
help of the local convention
bureau.
