According to Mrs. Tucker, there
weren't many snafus in coordinat-
ing all of the activities. She added,
however, that there were some
tense moments. Getting the hotel
ready to receive the delegates
posed a problem. By last Monday
afternoon, many of the Grand
Prix guests still hadn't checked
out of the hotel. But, Mrs. Tucker
said, "the Grand Prix people got
this place cleaned up."
The delegates came to Detroit
with the notion that people were
killing each other in the streets.
Assured that that was not the
case, they were eager to get a taste
of Detroit — asking many ques-
tions about Detroit restaurants.
Detroit Mayor Coleman Young, at
a luncheon welcoming speech,
encouraged the delegates to stay
on and enjoy the Freedom Festi-
val activities of this past week.
As the conference wound down
Saturday night at the concluding
awards banquet, the delegates
settled many musical scores, but
mostly in a businesslike
fashion.

The Association of Humanistic
Rabbis issued the following
statement on Jewish identity at
their annual meeting in Toronto
on May 4:
"Who is a Jew? After more
than 30 centuries, Jews continue
to debate the question. It is not
merely an academic exercise. At
issue is the identity of thousands
of intermarried couples and their
children as well as the status of
countless residents of the State of
Israel. In addition, the identity of
a large number of non-orthodox
and secular Jews may be ques-
tioned.
As humanistic Jews, we chal-
lenge the conventional assump-
tion that Jews constitute a reli-
gious community and that reli-
gious belief is essential to Jewish
identity. On the contrary, the
dominant factor in the identity of
many Jews is a cultural-
historical-ethnic awareness. To
be Jewish is to affirm one's par-
ticipation in the historical ex-
perience of the Jewish people.
"Thus, all persons, regardless
of birth and philosophic convic-
tion, who identify themselves
with the Jewish people and its
historic experience are entitled to
call themselves Jews and should
be so acknowledged by the
Jewish and non-Jewish world."
This statement was signed by
Rabbis Daniel Friedman, Deer-.
field, Ill.; Robert B. Barr, Cincin-
nati; Iser Freund, San Jose,
Calif.; Harold A. Friedman, Mar-
tinsville, Va.; Joseph R.
Rosenbloom, St. Louis; Jeffery M.
Silberman, Westport, Conn. and
Sherwin T. Wine, Birmingham.
