Jewish Agency
Articles Denounced

Five-part series in The Jewish News is the subject of
controversy at the annual assembly in Jerusalem

BY SYLVIA MEHLMAN
Special to The Jewish News

Jerusalem — As there was no
local scandal today, thank you for pro-
viding one yourselves," said Mayor
Teddy Kollek to the opening session of
the Jewish Agency General Assembly
here on Sunday night.
Assembly members and guests
laughed appreciatively but a bit un-
certainly. They seemed bewildered by
the speed with which the latest "scan-
dal" had erupted_ and spread. There
were whispers of ploys behind the
scenes by forces interested in deepen-

ing the rift between Zionist leadership
in Israel and fund-raisers from abroad
who together make up the Jewish
Agency.
The storm ostensibly centered on
the publication and distribution of re-

`Tip Of The Iceberg'

BY ALAN HITSKY
News Editor

In what one in-
dustry insider
claims is "just the
tip of the iceberg,"
travel agent Benny
Hershkovitz will
appear in 48th Dis-
trict Court in
Bloomfield Hills on
Monday to face
Benny Hershkovitz
charges that he de-
frauded 20 Temple Israel couples of
$93,132.
Hershkovitz may also face addi-
tional charges that he embezzled hun-
dreds of thousands of dollars in recent
months from Detroiters and the travel
industry.
The Jewish News has also learned
that Hershkovitz vacated his Franklin
Center office, at Franklin and North-
western Highway, owing his landlord
$17,000-$18,000, and he may owe El
Al Israel Air Lines and other air car-
riers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
As The Jewish News went to
press, Michigan State Police officals
were considering further indictments
against Hershkovitz, whose financial
difficulties became public when the
Temple Israel members contacted

authorities several weeks ago.
Temple Israel board member
Jimm F. White, an attorney who was
handling the matter for the temple
and its members, said the temple's trip
was canceled April 16. "Hershkovitz
closed his B & H Travel office and vac-
ated his home around May 22," White
said. "When the money was not re-
turned, and his lawyer said he could
not contact him anymore, we con-
tacted the police.
