Congenital heart disease is the ab-
normal development of the heart be-
fore a child is born. A congenital
heart defect may be diagnosed at
birth or it may be discovered at some
time during childhood in a routine
physical examination. Some defects
may be caused by drugs taken
during pregnancy or exposure to
German measles (rubella) during
pregnancy. They may be inherited.
or the cause may be unknown. Con-
genital heart defects may require
only minimal medical supervision or
they may require corrective surgery
to avoid complications later in life.
Some congenital heart defects can
be prevented by vaccination of the
mother against rubella prior to preg-
nancy and by following a doctor's ad-
vice while taking medications during
pregnancy. Contact your local Ameri-
can Heart Association for more
information.

Dr. William Haber

Prof. William Haber, former
dean of the College of Literature,
Science, and the Arts at the Uni-
versity of Michigan, will have a
chair in economics dedicated in
his honor at the Hebrew Univer-
sity of Jerusalem on Monday.
The William Haber Chair in
Economics was donated to the
university by a group of Prof.
Haber's friends in the Detroit
area. Harold Berry, immediate
past president of the Michigan
Chapter of the American Friends
of the Hebrew University, and
Erwin Ziegelman, chairman of
the executive committee, in-
itiated this tribute four years
ago.
The chair is being dedicated
this year to coincide with Prof.
Haber's celebration of his golden
anniversary at the University of
Michigan. He has served the
University of Michigan as chair-
man of the department of eco-
nomics and as dean of the College
of Literature, Science and the
Arts (the largest academic unit at
the university). In 1968 the
Board of Regents appointed him
special adviser to the executive
office of the university, a position
he still holds.
Dr. Haber has had a close asso-
ciation with the federal govern-
ment and the government of the
state of Michigan. During the

trations. He assisted the federal
government in redrafting th So-
cial Security Act in 1939 and
served for more than ten years as
chairman of the Federal Advisory
Council on Employment Secu-
rity. Dean Haber has also served
the Department of Commerce in
several capacities.
He is the author of several vol-
umes and numerous professional
publications in labor relations,
unemployment insurance, and
social security. He has also
served as consultant and labor
arbitrator around the world.

In the area of Jewish affairs,
Dr. Haber has had a long experi-
ence dating back to 1939 when on
leave from the U of M he or-
ganized and directed the Na-
tional Refugee Service. In 1948
he served as special adviser on
Jewish affairs to Gen. Lucius
Clay, th American commander-
in-chief in Germany.
His lifelong concern for the
welfare of those in need has led
him to positions with the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee, Ameri-
can Joint Distribution Commit-
tee, and to his role as president of
the World ORT Union for 25
years, where he now holds the
position of honorary president.
He has been chairman of the
academic affairs committee at
Brandeis University and for the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem,

committee and currently serves
on its board of governors.
