Berlin Honors
Yehudi Menuhin

Berlin — American violinist
Yehudi Menuhin was granted the
honorary title of professor by the
City of Berlin recently, a week
• after celebrating his 70th birth-
day.
At a ceremony in the city's
Museum of Musical Instruments,
Berlin Mayor Eberhard Diepgen
I paid tribute to the artist's musi-
cal achievements as well as to his
\ efforts on behalf of reconciliation
• between Germans and Jews and
1 his commitment of peace.
In an acceptance speech,
Menuhin underscored his belief
in the reconciliatory power of
music. He called Berlin, where he
had made his debut in 1929 at
,age 13, a "city of hope." Menuhin
was one of the first Jewish artists
• to perform again in Germany
after the defeat of the Nazis.
