Tragedies happen in life, but
one of hardest for a parent to
bear is the death of a child.
Alan and Elaine Herbst, of West
Bloomfield continue to struggle
daily with the memory of their
daughter Lisa Amy, who at age
14 months, was killed in a
tragic automobile accident last
summer.
In an effort to allow their
daughter's memory to live on,
the Herbsts have established a
memorial fund in her name at
Sinai Hospital of Detroit.
"I wanted to start a fund bear-
ing Lisa's name with the money
going to help other children live
long and healthy lives," says
Herbst. The money from the
Lisa Amy Herbst Memorial
Fund is • used to purchase
equipment for Sinai's Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit.
Since the fund was estab-
lished last year, more than
$5,000 dollars has been col-
lected. The money has been used
to help finance the purchase of a
transcutaneous monitor, which
measures the oxygen level in
the blood of the premature
babies whose lives are often
saved in this state-of-the-art
unit.
"There are several basic
things we must do for sick new-
borns to be successful in treat-
ing them, and one of them is
maintaining the oxygen content
of the blood at an adequate level
so the brain continues to film:
tion normally and is not dam-
aged," said Dr. Gerald Katzman,
director of the NICU. "This
piece of equipment allows us to
accomplish our goal by not only
monitoring the level on a con-
tinuous basis, but more impor-
tantly, by alarming us when th
level is too high or too low."
Donations to the fund have
been made by family and friends
of the Herbsts. Periodically the
Ira Kaufman Chapel gives a do-
nation
to the fund. People are

Adopt-A-Family
Program Grows
The Jewish Community Coun-
cil's Adopt-a-Family program
will grow by 90 participating
families when members of
Young Israel of Southfield are
paired with refuseniks by coun-
cil's Detroit Soviet Jewry Com-
mittee.
Chaired by Bill and Susan
Graham, the Adopt-a-Family
program links area individuals,
organizations, or families to
Soviet Jewish families seeking
to emigrate. The Detroit area
participant provides support to
the adopted Soviet family by
sending letters, placing tele-
phone calls, communicating
with both Soviet and U.S. gov-
ernment officials on behalf of
the refusenik, and remembering
the family at holidays.

Adopt-a-Family program, con-
