Leonard N. Simons, area ad-
vertising executive and charity
fund raiser, received an. honor-
ary Doctor of Humane Letters
degree at Marygrove College's
76th commencement ceremonies.
Detroit history scholar Simons
was one of the first non-Catholic
members of the college's advi-
sory board in the early 1960s
and was instrumental in helping
to raise funds for the library
addition. He also contributed a
number of valuable art works to
Marygrove.
A founding member and
president emeritus of the De-
troit Historical Commission,
where he served under seven
mayors, Simons is an honorary
board member of the Detroit
Historical Society, and a board
member and first chairman of
the Michigan Cancer Founda-
tion (which named the Leonard
Simons Cancer Research Li-
brary in his honor).
A noted expert on the history
of Detroit's Jews, he helped
found the American Jewish His-
torical Society of Michigan; is a
co-founder of the Greater De-
troit Interfaith Round table of
the National Conference of
Christians and Jews and of
Sinai Hospital.
A past president of Temple
Beth El, vice president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation and
founding board member of the
Jewish Home for the Aged, Si-
mons was also instrumental in
forming the board of advisors for
the Wayne State University
Press — which is named in his
honor — and is an honorary Phi
Beta Kappa as well as a fellow
of Brandeis University.

pendence of senior citizens."
The JVS Senior Service Corps
allows individuals over the age
of 60, many of whom are handi-
capped, the opportunity to be-
come involved in meaningful
volunteer work. Under the
supervision of Gloria Bender
and Barbara Peltz, volunteers
work at Sinai Hospital, Grace
Hospital, and various Jewish
community agencies, performing
clerical or other tasks.
