AJCommittee's Gordis To Speak -Here
Dr. David Gordis
The Detroit Chapter of the
American Jewish Committee
will host Dr. David M. Gordis,
national executive vice
president, at its 80th anniver-
sary celebration and annual
meeting at Temple Beth El at
7:30 p.m. June 17.
A musical interlude and the
Rosner Trio, flute, clarinet and
piano, and a wine and dessert
buffet are included on the pro-
gram.
Before coming to the AJCom-
mittee in July 1984, Dr: Gordis,
a Conservative rabbi ; was vice
president of the University of
Judaism in Los Angeles and
vice president of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America, with which the Uni-
versity -of Judaism is • affiliated.
He also has been. a visiting
lecturer in Talmud at Brandeis
University, a visiting lecturer in
religion at Vassar College and a
lecturer in Jewish. law at
U.C.L.A. Law School.
A native New Yorker, Dr.
Gordis earned B.A. and M.A.
degrees- in Jewish history :at
Columbia University; and . Mas-
ter of Hebrew Literature and
Ph.D. degrees in Talmud at the
Jewish Theological. Seminary.
Be was ordained a rabbi by the
seminary in 1964.
A member of the Executive
Council of the Rabbinical As-
sembly, a director of the Jewish
Television Network, Dr. Gordis
has been a member of the Los
Angeles Jewish Federation's
Council on Jewish Life, an
executive committee member
and chairman of the interreli-
gious affairs committee of
American Jewish Committee
and a member of the executive
committee. of the Pdfnmissibittin
Soviet Jewry.
Dr. Goidis is a former chair-
man of the United Synagogue
Council ori *--J-eWish • Education,
and a former member of the
Bioethics Committee of the Na-
tional Conference of Christians
and •
He has published on Jewish
ethics, law and philosophy; the
Jewish family; the Conservative
movement; Jewish views on
medical issues; aspects of Israeli
life and Jewish education.
