and the people of Israel repre-
sent a sterling example of the
freedom and opportunity that
are reached through loyalty,
bravery and devotion."
U.S. Senator Don Riegle,
spoke of the historic struggle of
the Jewish people to be free, in
peace. He spoke about a man he
had met, one of the fortunate
few who had left the Soviet
Union six years ago, "I was
struck by how robust he seemed,
how alive." Riegle constrasted
him with the Soviet Jews he
secretly met in Moscow and
Leningrad who talked about the
inhumanity they were facing in
the Soviet Union, about being
turned into "non-people." Riegle
spoke of the millions in the
Soviet Union who didn't have
the freedom "that we, and the
citizens of Israel, have today."
"It is encouraging to the fu-
ture," he said, "that we have
much to be thankful for — the
long history of the Jewish
people is one of heroism. Modern
Israel is alive and well, and we
gather today as an active com-
mitment that she'll remain that
way, forevermore."
Riegle spoke of the "ever-
present dark-side": the constant
pressure of the Arab confronta-
tion states; terrorism; the inhu-
manity inflicted on Jews in the
Soviet Union, Ethiopia and
other places; Israel's economic
difficulties; and the persistence
of anti-Semitism.
He said Sunday's celebration
was one of mixed feelings. There
was happiness and joy, for Is-
rael's endurance, and accom-
plishments, but there was also
the knowledge that these were
acquired by the shedding of
blood and the iron will and ef-
fort of a determined people, who
to maintain Israel, must be et-
ernally vigilant.
Max Sheldon introduced to
the crowd a delegation of Michi-
gan athletes who participated in
the Maccabiah Games in Israel
last summer. He said that "if it
weren't for these new Maccab-
beans, 1948 wouldn't have hap-
pened." "Herzl," he said, "also
understood that the Jews in Is-
rael couldn't create an indepen-
dent state until a new muscular
Jew would be created — one
who is mentally and physically
strong."
Lawrence Jackier chaired the
Yediat Yisrael — Israel Knowl-
edge Quiz, which is expected to
become an annual event at the
Israel Independence Day cele-
bration. Participating were chil-
dren from Adat Shalom
Synagogue, Birmingham Tem-
ple, Cong. Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses, Beth Achim, B'nai
Israel, B'nai Moshe, Shaarey
Zedek, Hillel Day School,
Jewish Parents Institute, Tem-
ple Emanu-El, Temple Israel,
Temple Kol Ami and Akiva He-
brew Day School.
Judging the contest were Jane
Sherman, Don Fox and Alex
Blumenberg.
At the end of three tension-
filled rounds three teams were
awarded Israel Bonds: Birming-
ham Temple — Jeremy Green,
Joel Pittman, Michael Ober;

Israel Marks
38th Anniversary
Of Independence

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israelis
celebrated the 38th anniversary
of their independence last week
without incident but mainly in-
doors. Unseasonably chilly
weather discouraged the usual
mass exodus to beaches and pic-
nic grounds.
Thousands of residents of the
northern border town of Kiryat
Shemona participated in In-
dependence Day festivities.
Local leaders said it was a
gesture of defiance after a
Katyusha rocket exploded in
Upper Galilee, slightly injuring
a man and two children. Thou-
sands more gathered at th Tal
grove at the foot of the Golan
Heights.
The Knesset held "open
house" for the first time and
thousands queued up outside for
a chance to see a plenary session
of parliament at first hand. They
were also able to view the
original document of Israel's
Declaration of Independence on
display in the Knesset and to
hear it read in recording by
Prime Minister David Ben
Gurion in his historic broadcast
of May 14, 1948:
President Chaim Herzog held
receptions at his residence for
soldiers and diplomats. Another
tradition of Independence Day
was the finals of the annual in-
ternational Bible quiz. This
year's winner was an Israeli,
Yoav Schlossberg.

Israel, China
Link Phones

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel and
the People's Republic of China
opened their first telephone con-
nections last Monday. Calls now
go through the telephone ex-
change in each country but
direct dialing will become possi-
ble in the not too distant future.
Israel radio recorded and
broadcast the first telephone
conversation between countries
at the opposite ends of the
Asian continent. It was between
the supervisors at their respec-
tive exchanges. The Chinese
supervisor asked her Tel Aviv
counterpart how to spell the
name Israel. She wasn't quite
sure where it is located.
