Israel Gets
War Criminal
Files From UN

United Nations (JTA) —
Israel received last Monday the
copies of 347 files on Nazi war
criminals from the UN archives,
compiled by the now-defunct
UN War Crimes Commission.
The files were given to Bin-
yamin Netanyahu, Israel's Am-
bassador to the UN, who was
escorted by Yitzhak Arad, chair-
man of Yad Vashem, Israel's
memorial and research institute
on the Holocuast in Jerusalem,
at the UN archives which are
stored in Manhattan.
Israel recently asked to in-
spect the UN archives to see if
they contain files on any 1,379
Nazi war criminals still wanted
by Israel. According to Net-
anyahu, the 347 files obtained
by Israel were the only ones
which corresponded with the list
submitted by Israel earlier. The
files will be sent to Yad Vashem
for closer inspection.
Netanyahu called on Secre-
tary General Javier Perez de
Cuellar to open all the files in the
UN archives to the public.
Noting that the rules of con-
fidentiality governing access to
the files were determined by the
Secretariat, the Israeli envoy
said, that °°it was this confiden-
tiality that enabled such thing
as the election of Kurt Wald-
heim to be Secretary General of
the UN."

U.S. Arrests
Israeli For
Gun Smuggling

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The De-
fense Ministry said last week
that it is in no way connected
with Ze'ev Reiss, an Israeli na-
tional, arrested at JFK Airport
in New York and charged by
U.S. authorities with an at-
tempt to smuggle American
weapons to a Persian Gulf
country.
Reiss, an Israel Defense Force
reservist with the rank of Lt.
Colonel and a former basketball
player for the Hapoel Sports
Club International, is not known
to have requested assistance
from any Israeli official. The
Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem
said it has no intention of in-
tervening in the case.
Reiss was the seventh Israeli
U.S. authorities arrested in the
past month, or issued warrants
for their arrest, in connection
with an alleged scheme to sell
more than $2 billion in Amer-
ican weapons to Iran in violation
of the U.S. arms embargo
against that country. But
sources here said there appeared
to be no connection between
Reiss and the six other Israelis
charged by the U.S. last April.
The latter include a retired
IDFgeneral, Abraham Baram,
and William Northrop, who
holds dual U.S.-Israeli citizen-
ship. They are presently in Ber-
muda fighting extradition.
