Orthodox, Conservative, Re-
form and unaffiliated Jews loc-
ally and from throughout the
country have shown their support
for an Orthodox Jewish day
school in the wake of its recent
tragedy.
Checks from California, Mary-
land, Ohio and Florida, as well as
from Jews in the metropolitan
Detroit area have been coming to
the Yeshivath Beth Yehudah in
Southfield to help pay for the re-
pair of interior damage and re-
placement of equipment wrecked
by vandals during the weekend of
April 25-27.
That weekend, vandals broke
into the rear of the building and
smashed windows of classroom
doors, wrecked office equipment
beyond repair and ruined or de-
stroyed equipment and materials
in some of the classrooms. The
synagogue, in the front of the
building, was untouched. •
Rabbi Norman Kahn, the
school's executive vice president,
and Rabbi E.B. Freedman, ad-
ministrative director, were hear-
tened by the outpouring of sup-
port from persons from the entire
spectrum of Jewish tradition. In a
letter to The Jewish News, the
rabbis wrote: ". . .many individu-
als from the widest spectrum of
Detroit Jewry have rallied to our
support, our long time friends as
well as new friends.
"There is so much talk of lack
of unity and disharmony in the
Jewish world today that we wish
to acknowledge publicly the
harmony and unity that we are
witnessing. We have been con-
tacted by members and .represen-
tatives of Orthodox, Conservative
and Reform organizations as well
as unaffiliated Jews wishing to
help us through our present diffi-
culties."
Rabbi Freedman said many
persons with whom the school
had lost contact, had read about
the yeshivah's plight in The
Jewish News and sent letters of
support and checks. Oak Park
Mayor Charlotte Rothstein, the
Jewish Community Council, the
Detroit office of Bar-Ilan Univer-
sity and the Rabbi Mandel M.
Zager-Louis Stone/Albert
Tucker-Samuel Grant Lodge of
B'nai B'rith and other private in-
dividuals and organizations have
expressed their shock at the
tragedy and have made dona-
tions.
Many offers of office equipment
have been made, but the school is
desperately in need of the follow-
ing, in good working order: a
copier, computers (terminals and
monitors), typewriters, adding
machines, slide projector and film
projector. (Temple Emanu-El do-
nated a mimeograph/duplicating
machine, but another is needed.)
On Tuesday, Rabbi Freedman
had received two offers of tele-
phone systems. Replacement of
the telephone system, destroyed
by the vandals, is estimated at
$8,000.
Southfield Police said there are
no new developments in the case,
and the investigation is continu-
ing.
