Missing the Point:
Neighborhood Flight

Your articles (May 9) on "Sav-
ing the Neighborhood" were
flawed by their dishonesty in not
facing up to the real reason be-
hind the disintegrating situation
in Oak Park (and to some extent
Southfield). Other than the few
Orthodox who remain, there are
almost no young Jewish families
left in Oak Park, and the freeway
has little to do with the situation.
Jews have moved from Oak
Park for the same reason they
moved from 12th Street, Dexter
and Seven Mile, and it's the same
reason they'll eventually move
from Farmington Hills and West
Bloomfield. The movement of
blacks and other minorities into
an area causes a panic reaction
among us Jews who feel that such
an influx of minorities will cause
the school system to deteriorate
and property values to decline.
Even today I hear the begin-
nings of disquiet among some of
my West Bloomfield friends who
are concerned about the large
number of Chaldeans who are
moving into the area. "Where do
we go from here?" they ask after
having lived in the area for all of
maybe five years. They're
frightened they won't even get
the 15-20 years of neighborhood
stability their parents got.
The efforts of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation are futile. For
years, they stalled any attempt to
put a pool in the Jewish Center
on Ten Mile because they didn't
want to spend money on a losing
proposition. Now they want to
"Save the Neighborhood." Sorry,
it's too late. Just ask the
synagogues who are talking
merger and movement out of the
city.
The Federation should put
their money into a study to see if
there is a way to keep Jews from
running at the first sign of a
changing neighborhood. Other-
wise, we'll always be "wandering
Jews."

France Defends
Libya Decision

I would like to express my con-
cern at some local reactions to the
French Government's decision
regarding the over-flight of U.S.
planes en route to Libya. It is re-
grettable that this decision
should have been perceived as a
lack of solidarity with the al-
liance of Western democracies
toward international terrorism.
Prime Minister Jacques Chirac
has since reaffirmed this solidar-
ity in the strongest terms, and I
feel that an objective examina-
tion of recent French policy
toward Libya should remove any
doubts as to the value of France's
commitment in this matter .. .
France's ambassador to the
United States, Emmanuel de
Margerie, stated that was not
possible for France to give im-
mediate authorization for the
overflight of American planes,
but France was ready, im-
mediately, to "consult with you
on the best measures, to take in

the face of terrorism, those who
support it, inspire it and encour-
age it. The American response
was there was not time for such
consultations . ."
De Margerie also said, "I feel
that it is necessary to point out
tht the French government
neither approved nor disapproved
the American operation in Libya.
We expressed our concern regard-
ing the risk of a spiral of events.
At the United Nations Security
Council, France, with Great
Britain and the United States,
vetoed a resolution condemning
the United States for its action
against Libya."

More, No Less,
Holocaust Events

I am confused by your editorial
about Yom Hashoah of May 2,
entitled "The Memory Game".
You ask, "Are we diluting our-
selves or deluding ourselves? Are
there too many programs in too
many places . . .?"
I agree with your primary em-
phasis. That is, Yom Hashoah is
an extremely important day that
we Jews need to take more seri-
ously. That includes finding time
to participate in a memorial serv-
ice. If you are also suggesting
that fewer memorial services
should be held to ensure that
attendance at each one would be
larger, I strongly disagree.
Yom Hashoah is sufficienty
important that every synagogue,
every Jewish communal organ-
ization, should find some way to
remember this day.
Every Jewish organization
finds some way to celebrate the
important holidays of Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and
rightly so. I believe it is our gen-
eration's responsibility to ensure
that Yom Hashoah is as widely
observed as these other signific-
ant days of the Jewish calendar.

Paper Chastized
For Printing Ad

My husband and I have been
readers of The Jewish News for
almost 40 years, but never have
we seen in your newspaper, or
any other newspaper for that
matter, anything to compare
with the paid advertisement on
Page 23 of the May 2 issue.
I do not know the gentleman in
question,,or why he would wish to
air his dirty linen in public. What.
I do question is the morality of
your staff in printing an adver-
tisement that maligns and de-
fames the character of another
person, that accuses this person
of wrongdoing without knowl-
edge of the situation .
