Temple Kol Ami
Honors Its Rabbi

Temple Kol Ami will honor its
rabbi, Ernst J. Conrad, at a tes-
timonial dinner to be held at 7:30
p.m. at Tam O'Shanter Country
Club on Thursday. Cocktails will
be served at 6:30 p.m.
The occasion will mark the
65th birthday of the rabbi and his
completion of 20 years of service
to the congregation which was
founded by eight families and
Rabbi Conrad in 1966. The con-
gregation has now grown to 270
family units.
Initially, services were held at
the Birmingham Unitarian
Church, whose minister, Robert
Marshall, was associated in
many civic endeavors with the
rabbi. Religious school sessions
were held at various public
schools in Oakland County and
are now held at Hillel Day
School.
In 1969, the congregation pur-
chased 51/2 acres of land on - Wal-
nut Lake Road. In 1974 the cur-
rent building was erected; it was
dedicated on Passover 1975, and
several additions have since been
completed. The congregation's
bar and bat mitzvah services are
conducted entirely by the young
people, with an active participa-
tion of family members.
Rabbi Conrad has participated
in numerous Jewish and general .
organizations, such as the Jewish
Community Council, the advi-
sory board of the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith, the Michigan League for
Human Services, Michigan Reli-
gious Coalition for Abortion
Rights, and the Michigan Coali-
tion for Human Rights.
He will become ,"Founding
Rabbi Emeritus" of the temple as
of July 1. He will continue to
serve until a successor is ap-
pointed, and will remain active in
the congregation and the Met-
ropolitan Detroit Jewish and
general communities. The rabbi,
who was ordained at Hebrew
Union College in Cincinnati in
1947, is a past chairman of the
Rabbinical Commission of the
Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit and the
West Bloomfield Clergy.
The committee planning this
event is headed by -Gerry Wigod,
president. Persons interested in
attending the dinner may make
arrangements by calling the
temple, 661-0040.
