ARE YOU Al' THE AGE

Lifshits Is
Given 3 Years

The Soviet attorney who de-
fended Leningrad Hebrew
teacher Vladimir Lifshits in
March is demanding that the
three-year prison sentence im-
posed for "defaming the Soviet
state and social system" be
dropped. According to the attor-
ney, the prosecution failed to
prove its case.
Charges of contempt were
dropped against Anna Lifshits,
who refused to testify against
her husband. Anna says mate-
rial pertaining to her husband's
case, including letters he wrote
to Soviet agencies seeking em-
ployment, his invitation from
relatives in Israel, and a docu-
ment confirming his Israeli citi-
zenship, have all disappeared
from his file.
Over 100 Leningrad and Mos-
cow refuseniks, the American
Deputy Consul and a represen-
tative from the Dutch Embassy
were denied entrance to the Lif-
shits trial because authorities
said the room was too small.
Letters of protest can be sent
to: Judge Poludnyakov, Head of
Leningrad City Court, Fontanks
St. 16, Leningrad, RSFSR,
USSR.
City Procurator of Leningrad,
Ponomariov ul. Belinskogo 13,
Leningrad, RSFSR, USSR.
Another case being followed
by the Jewish Community
Council's Detroit Soviet Jewry
Committee is that of Alex
Magarik, a Soviet Jewish musi-
cian and Hebrew teacher who
was arrested during a return
trip from Tbilisi to Moscow.
Magarik is charged with pos-
session of narcotics, supposedly
found in his luggage.
Jeannie Weiner, the Council
committee chairman, is asking
the Detroit community, on be-
half of Magarik's father who
lives in Israel, to send cables to
Soviet authorities, protesting
the arrest and charges before a
trial begins.
Correspondence should be sent
to:
Ministry of Justice, ul.
Obykha x4, Moscow 129028,
RSFSR, USSR.
Ambassador Anatoly Dobry-
nin, Embassy of the USSR, 1
Andrei Sakharov Plaza, N.W.,
Washington, D.C. 20036.
Aleksandr M. Rekunkov, Pro-
curator General, u.
Pushkinskaya 15-A, Moscow
103009, RSFSR, USSR. .
A.E.
Chief Procurator,
