LOCAL NEWS
All of the glass in classroom doors was smashed.
Rabbi Kahn was deeply moved
by what he saw. "This is the
worst thing that happened to us
in 30 years. I just broke down and
cried." He said the school, which
normally has a strained budget,
will suffer greatly by the cost of
replacing and repairing equip-
ment which is estimated at
thousands of dollars. He appealed
to the community "to help us in
this trying time."
Immediate needs include a
copier, adding machines,
filmstrip projector, intercom sys-
tem, computer terminals and
monitors, typewriters and clocks.
Monetary contributions can be
sent to Yeshivath Beth Yehudah, '
Box 2044, Southfield 48037.
Kahn said the school was for-
tunate that no one was in the
building at the time of the inci-
dent. Rabbi E.B. Freedman, an
assistant administrator, said the
"worst part" was when the chil-
dren came for services. When
they saw that the aquarium
which they visit daily to feed
their fish was destroyed, they:
cried.
Both Rabbi Kahn and Officer
Conat said there were no clues as
to who perpetrated the act and
why. No anti-Semitic scrawlings
were detected, but according to
Rabbi Loketch, whoever did the
job "was filled with hate and vio-
lence."
Kahn and Freedman said there'
were no incidents that they knew
of that would have led to such
violence.
Kahn said he believes the van-
dals came in twice. He said when.
he came to the school on Friday
he made a mental note of what
was damaged. When he returned
on Saturday, he said the vands.is
"came back and finished the job."
However, according to Officer
Conat, only one police report was
filed, that of Friday.
By Monday morning, clean-up
had already begun, and according
to Rabbi Freedman, plans were to
have the building cleaned and
the glass replaced by the conclud-
ing days of Passover which began
Tuesday night. As The Jewish.
News went to press, plans were to ,
resume classes on Sunday, but
school administrators were un-
sure of the location, Regular serv- -
ices will continue in the
synagogue.
The school had no regular se -
.
curity guard, but now school ad-
ministrators are consulting secu-
rity experts.
Normally during Chol Hamoed
Passover, the school is used for
simchat yontiff, holiday celebra-
tions. This year's activities were
canceled, Rabbi Kahn said.
"There was no joy this yontiff."
