He made further news by be-
coming a founder, along with
Orson Welles and John House-
man, of the Mercury Theater
Company.
His film work hit new heights
in Saboteur, an Alfred Hitchcock
movie in which he plunged from
the Statue of Liberty.
That performance started a
40-year liaison with Hitchcock,
which includes Nolan serving as
associate producer, producer,
executive producer and director of
television's "Alfred Hitchcock
Presents."
Nolan also worked on televi-
sion's "Omnibus" and PBS' "Hol-
lywood Television Theatre."
Sure, he has his favorites. "One
loves certain characters, even the
villains," says Lloyd. "But I really
love Auschlander. There is some-
thing wonderful about him. He is
a survivor."
Auschlander's ability to sur-
vive cancer — diagnosed during
the first season — has the Ameri-
can Cancer Society pointing with
pride that cancer is not necessar-
ity a death sentence. "Auschlan-
der believes that you have to go on
with life, with as much joy as you
can muster."
There was no joy on the Lower
East Side, viewers discovered last
month, for the young Auschlan-
der who had to cope with fistfights
just because he was a Jew. The
actor takes pride in the fact that
"St. Elsewhere" is tackling such a
topic. "It shows a responsibility
toward the audience," he says.
"St. Elsewhere" producers, re-
sponsible as they are, realize that
a sick Auschlander may not be
able to play tennis forever. "In one
episode, Auschlander had some
side effects from the
chemotherapy," said Lloyd.
In another segment — a "St.
Elsewhere" twist on the life of
Mark Twain — Auschlander re-
veals that he was born during the
appearence of Halley's Comet ear-
lier in this century and expects to
die during its 1986 reappearance.
"Some people got worried when
reading the script" that the comet
episode was Auschlander's
epilogue.
Well, was it? "Wait and see,"
chuckles Lloyd.

Youth Plan
Joint Effort

New York — The presidents
of four national Jewish youth
groups — Reform, Conservative,
Orthodox, and Zionist — have
held a series of meetings in New
York City to plan joint national
projects on assisting the elderly
and Soviet Jewry.
Meeting at their. own initia-
tive, they came from the Na-
tional Conference of Synagogue
Youth (Ortho'doi), United
Synagogue Youth (Conserva-
tive), North American Federa-
tion of Temple Youth (Reform),
and Young Judaea (sponsored
by Hadassah). They drew plans
to bring their 50,000 high
school-age members together on
the local and regional level.
