sharp abont face last week when
he accused Presidential can-

Waldheim recently against
charges by the World Jewish
Congress that he was implicated
in atrocities while a Wehrmacht

Austrian elections. But at a
rally here for Socialist Presiden-
tial candidate Kurt Steyrer,
Kreisky charged that Waldheim
has been less than truthful in his
own defense. `Truth in politics•
consists not only of telling the
truth but also of not with-
holding important parts of it,"
Kreisky said.
He said Waldheim's defense
has consisted of admitting
things about his past piece-by-
piece, only after facts • were
discovered by the press.
Despite the charges against
him, Waldheim, the candidate of
the conservative Peoples Party
in next month's Presidential
elections, appears to be the
front-runner. - Alois Mock,
Peoples Party chairman, said he
would accept the verdict of in-
cumbent President Rudolph
Kirchschlaeger who received
documents related to Wald-
heim's past. They consist of a
copy of the file on Waldheim
from United Nations archives
and further documents from the
World Jewish Congress on
Waldheim's wartime activ-
ities.
The Waldheim file, which
originated with the now defunct
United Nations War Crimes
Commission, was made accessi-,
ble to representatives of the
Austrian government and of the
Israel government. No details
were released because access
was granted under terms of
strictest confidentiality.
Waldheim has been accused
specifically of a role in the
murder of Yugoslavian par-
tisans, women and children and
in the deportation of Greeks
Jews from Salonika, Crete and
Rhodes to Auschwitz, when he
served as second 'lieutenant in
intelligence, attached to the Ger-
man General Staff in the Bal-
kans. He has vehemently denied
the charges.
Meanwhile, the Central
Jewish Board of Greece decided
to ask the Greek government to
examine its own files to see if
there is any documentation on
Waldheim during the period of
the. Nazi occupation.
In another development, the
President of the. Jewish com-
munity on -the Greek island of
Rhodes claims that Waldheim
was one of three German of-
ficers who confiscated money,
geld and jewerly from the
island's Jews during World War
II. .
Bruno Kreisky
In an interview with Jean
Cohen, Israel Radio's Athens
correspondent, 80-year old
Maurice Soriano said he did not
know Waldheim's name at the
time, but has since identified
him positively.
He said that Waldheim and
two other German Wehrmacht
officers had come to the island
with two empty suitcases, had
assembled all the local Jews in
the central square of the main
town and island capital on June
18, 1944, and ordered them to
fill the cases with money, gold
and jewerly. The officers had
then left.
Soriano said he had made his
announcement following a docu-
ment published by the president
of the Greek Jewish community,
including photographs of
Waldheim in uniform on Rhodes
at the time and proving that
Waldheim had indeed visited
Rhodes during the war.
In a related development,
Waldheim was the signator of a
secret wartime intelligence re-
port on partisan activity in
Greece which was later used by
United States prosecutors at the
Nuremberg war crimes trials,
the World Jewish Congress dis-
closed last Monday.
The document, located at the
National Archives in Wash-
ington, is one of a series of 11
captured reports issued at the
headquarters of the high com-
mand of Heeresgrouppe E, the
command in which. Waldheim
served as a senior intelligence of-
ficer with the rank of Ober-Lieu-
tenant or First Lieutenant.
The Waldheim • document,
dated August 11, 1944 and
stamped "secret," is the evening
report of the intelligence section
of the high command of Army
Group E. It states: "Several
communists were shot during a
raid in Athens." It also reports .
The WJC asserted in releasing
the document, part. of Nurem-
'berg document NOKW-935,
that it provides "extraor-
dinary...corroboration" of con-
clusions reached last month by
WJC reserarchers and in 1947
by the Yugoslav war crimes
commission in a decision declar-
ing Waldheim to be a "fugitive
Nazi war criminal."
