day was somewhat worse than
ive years ago. On a scale of
ine, the current situation rated
.6, compared with 6.1 prior to
he war in Lebanon. Looking
head five years, respondents
redicted it would return to 6.1.
Regarding their current per-
:onal situation, respondents
ated it six on a scale of nine,
compared with 6.2 five years
ago. They foresaw improvement
in five years -- up to 6.6.
The same optimism was re-
flected in their faith in Israel's
future: 96 percent said they be-
lieved Israel would continue to
exist and 86 percent saw no
danger of another Holocaust.
Less than half the respon-
dents demonstrated a readiness
to make additional personal sac-
rifices for the sake of national
security, including higher taxes
and longer stretches of army
service and reserve duty. They
also showed a high degree of
resignation to the status quo
and a reluctance to challenge
the established order of things.
The survey showed enormous
confidence in the face of outside
threats. When asked whether
Israel could successfully con-
front a combined attack by all
the Arab states, 75 percent said
yes. War against Syria? 94 per-
cent said yes. An intensified ter-
ror campaign? 92 percent said
yes. Weakening of support by
the United States? 69 percent
said yes.
Glut Worries
Oil Expert
New York — Dr. Lawrence
Goldmuntz, chairman of the
American Jewish Committee's
Energy Committee, says U.S. oil
resources are being depleted
more rapidly than those in the
rest of the world. The U.S.
production-to-reserve ratio is the
highest among significant pro-
ducers. There are 1.2 wells per
square mile of sedimentary
basin in the United States,
while only .02 wells per square
mile of basin in the "rest of the
world.
Lower oil prices decrease
exploitable U.S. resources and
the incentive to discover and
develop new resources, he said.
This will be reflected in de-
creased production during the
next decade. Domestic explora-
tion and development. budgets
have been cut at.least 50 per-
cent.
Lower oil prices increase U.S.
consumption. This will be re-
flected more rapidly than .the
decrease in production. Utilities
have standby generating
capacity that could consume two
million barrels a day.
Dr. Goldmantz said in a re-
cent report that lower prices de-
crease incentives to develop
foreign resources, leaving those
significant producers with low
production-to-reserve ratios —
as the most
the Persian Gulf
important producers. This will
occur toward the end of the next
decade.
