Michael Kuchersky

With just a few weeks to go
until the closing of the 1986
Allied Jewish Campaign of
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion, much attention is being
given to the agencies that help
our local community.
The Person. Michael
Kuchersky believes that with
hard work, you can be a
somebody in this country. He
should know. Just 10 years
ago, he was a self-described
"nobody" — living in Moscow,
struggling to cope with con-
stant anti-Semitism and wor-
rying about his son's future.
Less than a decade later,
the energetic businessman is
the owner of the successful
Sunrise Cafe in Oak Park
and in Southfield. His wife
Maya is an established cos-
metologist and manager at a
local spa. His older son
Roman is active in Jewish
youth organizations and is
looking ahead to college in a
few years; son Daniel — born
in Detroit — is a second-
grader at a Jewish day
school.
A creative and intense
workaholic who hasn't had a
vacation in 10 years,
Kuchersky had few pos-
sessions when he arrived in
Detroit from Russia. After
learning the language and
holding various jobs, he pur-
chased a home with a loan
for the down payment from
Hebrew Free Loan Associa-
tion. He sees that as a turn-
ing point in his life here, not-
ing that it was crucial for
him to take advantage of
what he calls timing --

temporarily deflated interest
rates and house prices.
According to Kuchersky,
that was just the beginning.
After paying off that first
loan, he again turned to He-
brew Free Loan to help with
purchasing a small restau-
rant, which he later sold to
start the Sunrise Cafe. He
says of the agency, "They
don't give you money for
luxuries. What they do is
help you grow.".
On a typical day, you'll
find him rushing around his
Oak Park restaurant, overse-
eing the creation of his latest
Jewish delicacy or greeting a
customer. He is proud of his
creative approach to food and
of his rapport with his staff
... and proud that he has
turned his dream into reality.
"Everything I spent was a
good investment," he says.
"When, I came here, it looks
like I got some mazal.".
• The Agency. Founded over
90 years ago, Hebrew Free
Loan Association is a found-
ing agency of the Jewish
Welfare Federation and 're-
ceives funding from its Allied
.
Jewish Campaign.
Based on the Torah prohib-
ition against exacting inter-
est from a fellow Jew, the
agency provides immediate
help to those who can later
repay it. HFLA makes from
15 to 25 loans per month,
with the average loan around
$1,000. The volunteer-run
agency interviews applicants
on Sunday mornings in an in-
formal setting at its South-
field office. Applications are
acted upon quickly, with
funds generally disbursed
within a week.
Individuals from many
backgrounds are helped, with
More and more single parents
getting assistance for the
basics fqr their families.
HFLA also disburses and col-
lects some funds of the
• Jewish Educational Loan
Service, which provides
interest-free student loans, in
cooperation with the Jewish'
Welfare Federation and
Jewish Vocational Service
(JVS).
