Tel Aviv (JTA) — Avital
Shcharansky said last week that
the health condition of her hus-
band, recently-freed Prisoner of
Zion Anatoly, is not as bad as
has been described.
The earlier reports had been a
little exaggerated, she said dur-
ing a brief appearance at an in-
ternational conference in Jer-
usalem of Soviet Jewry activists
representing the. U.S. Union of
Councils for Soviet Jewry, the
British and the Jerusalem-based
Soviet Jewry Education and In-
formation Centre.
Reports of Anatoly's ill-health
spread when he failed to appear
at an earlier session. Avital said
that her husband's sleep con-
tinues to be disturbed by
dreams about being in the
punishment cells where he spent
several hundred days during the
nine years of his confinement in
prison and labor camps.
She said he still needed a
great deal of rest, and that it
' was difficult for him to face too
many people after his nine years
of being mostly alone, or some-
times with no more than two or
three people.
Anatoly has a slight heart
problem an is to undergo an-
other medical check-up — the
second, after the first one he
received the day after his arrival
—when they complete their cur-
rent vacation.
Avital added that her hus-
band was following the medical
advice he had received — to
walk a lot, to swim, and to eat
plenty of fruits and vege-
tables...things rich in vitamins.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Iraq, now in
the sixth year of its war with
Iran, has approximately 40 divi-
sions and one million men under
arms, more than the combined
strength of all the Arab confron-
tation states facing Israel, ac-
cording to an analysis by the
Israel Defense Force intelligence
services published in the IDF
Journal last week.
The report also states that the
Iraqi use of poison gas has in-
flicted at least 6,000 casualties
—dead and wounded — on Iran-
ian forces since the use of
chemical warfare by Iraq was
first reported in March, 1984.
But Iraq /has suffered a
greater loss of armor and
military aircraft than Iran, ac-
cording to IDF intelligence.
The war has cost Iraq several
hundred Million dollars in
foreign currency reserves. Its
reserves are now down to $5
billion, the IDF reported. One
out of every three Iraqi workers
is in some way mobilized for the
war effort.
The Iraqi army, now four time
the size of the Syrian• army,
grew sevenfold in strength since
the wax with Iran began in 1980.
