Starting out with a mere
$1,500, they literally built the
company from the ground up,
learning as they grew and
drawing on the strength of
Tulin's design skills and
Rosenbaum's manufacturing
connections in the Far East.
Born and raised in California,
Kris Tulin has been self-
employed during her entire
career. At the age of 18, she
took her sewing and design
talents to Hawaii where she
opened a small retail store and
sold the clothes she made.
After two years, Tulin re-
turned to California and started
manufacturing a small line
which she distributed herself to
boutiques in the San Francisco
Bay area. She was designing a
silk line when she met Louis
Rosenbaum, who became her
silk supplier.
The Elements line
named
because Tulin liked the notion
of parts put together to form a
complete entity — consists of
many coordinated pieces that
can be combined in various
ways for a multitude of looks.
"The essence of California
style is the freedom to express
oneself," says Tulin. "In my
clothing designs, I try to give
the customer a wide range of
choices and combinations."
Her spring collection consists
of a fresh array of cotton
fabrics styled to pared-down
body-conscious silhouettes.
Fabrics include prints, piques,
sateens, yarn dyes and knits,
all with inherent sheen. Colors
range from sky pastels to
garden brights. Styling evolves
from a Forties-inspired group to
a sleek, modernistic,
cosmopolitan collection.
Tulin finds inspiration in the
Italian design community
particularly the clean, functional
and modernistic point of view
of the Italians. "I don't like
clothes that are costumes,"
