Partners
For Life

Detroiters touch many lives
in Israel through the Jewish
Welfare Federation's Allied
Jewish Campaign.

The Person. Israeli citizen
Tamara Yossef is usually a
quiet, reserved person. But ask
her about Project Renewal and
the mother of four begins talk-
ing excitedly.
That's because Mrs. Yossef
lives in the Detroit commu-
nity's Project Renewal sister
city of Ramla. Designated as
part of the program in 1977,
the Agash-Bilu neighborhood
is made up mostly of eco-
nomically disadvantaged im-
migrants from Middle Eastern
and North African countries.
"Before, we wanted things to
be better," Mrs. Yossef says.
"But we didn't know how to
change them."
Through the Detroit-Ramla
program, a new feeling of pride
and involvement has grown in
the area. Mrs. Yossef notes, "It
didn't used to be so good for the
children." Without construc-
tive activities, she says there
were often gangs of teens
"hanging around" with noth-
ing to do. And the neighbor-
hood was an eyesore . . . un-
kempt homes and streets lit-
tered with trash.
Now the residents have
"learned to make life better"
for themselves, according to
Mrs. Yossef. There are
neighborhood meetings and
her home is among the many
that have been fixed up with
new plumbing and fresh paint.
There are after-school classes
for the kids and family activi-
ties.
But Mrs. Yossef is most
proud of the classes she has
taken at the beautiful new
community center. She has
improved her langauge skills
and is taking career develop-

will lead to a part-time office

"I see now that I can do many
things," she says. "I can make a
difference for my neighborhood
and my family — and for my-
self."

The Program. Project Re-
newal was initiated by the
Jewish Agency for Israel and
the Israel government, to en-
able Israel's disadvantaged
residents to take control of
their own destinies. Funding
for the Ramla program is coor-
dinated by the Jewish Welfare
Federation's Allied Jewish
Campaign, and channeled
through the Jewish Agency, a
major Campaign beneficiary.
The Detroit community is
one of over 230 that are "twin-
ned" to communities in Israel.
Most of the program's cost is
covered by Israel's taxpayers;
additional funding and direct
leadership involvement is pro-
vided by communities
throughout the world.
