Nazi Movies
To Be Analyzed
Ramat Gan — Fifteen Nazi
propaganda films — features,
documentaries and newsreels
made during the Hitler era,
many of them barred from pub-
lic view since 1945 — will be
screened and analyzed at an
"International Conference on
Media and Politics" at Bar-Ilan
University Feb. 10-13.
The conference, subtitled "The
Use of Film in Propaganda in
the Third Reich," will be
attended by 400 historians,
filmmakers, sociologists and
psychologists.
The films were made avail-
able to Bar-Ilan by the West
German government, which has
sequestered the material since
the end of World War II. They
were selected from more than
1,300 motion pictures made in
the Third Reich between 1933
and 1945 and include Jew

Riefenstahl's 1936 film extolling
Hitler, is generally considered a
masterpiece of cinematic prop-
aganda.
"The Nazis mastered the
cinema as a sophisticated
weapon of propaganda, and their
anti-Semitic obsession was con-
veyed to the German public
largely through film," said con-
ference organizer Dr. Baruch
Gillis. "For example, the notori-
ous Jew Suess was made oblig-
atory viewing for all German
soldiers.
"How film was used to force
the Nazi view of the Jew into
the minds of the German people
will be one focus of the confer-
ence."

Israel To Refund
$51 Million To U.S.
Voluntarily
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel will
return to the United States next
month $51 million of the $1.2
billion economic aid grant it
received in a lump sum last
October 1, the beginning of the
1986 fiscal year, it was announc-
ed last week.
The refund is voluntary on
Israel's part. It will be made to
help the Reagan Administration
meet the budgetary constraints
imposed by the recently legis-
lated Gramm-Rudman law. All
recipients of U.S. economic and
military assistance are affected
as a result of the across-the-
board 4.3 percent reduction in
foreign aid mandated by Con-
gress.
It was reported, meanwhile,
that the Ministerial Economic
committee is considering an ex-
tension of the current price
freeze in some sectors of the
economy beyond the June 1 ex-
piration date. This is being
studied in connection with pro-
posals the government will
make to Histadrut when new
wage negotiations begin next
month.
