therefore allowed to escape. This
parallels the release of Minister
Weir who repeated the Arab
line on TV, to his captor's de-
light. —
This is in sharp contrast to
another hostage, 'Father Jenco,
still a captive, whose family dis-
couraged negotiations, and who
said that "the American Hos-
tage Committee" suffers from
P.L.O. involvement." We note
the self-revealing statement of
"Sis" Levin: "Neither my hus-
band nor I are against Israel";
also she was quoted as "indig-
nant at efforts to purge the Hos-
tage. Committee of Arabs and
Palestinians." The contrast bet-
ween her indignation and the
expression of the Jenco family
speaks for itself.
This writer feels that "Sis"
Levin, who is not Jewish, is the
controlling spouse, and is
exploiting the humanitarian as-
pect of the Arab cause. Jerry
Levin shows by his own words
to possess very limited grasp of
the complexities of the situation,
and that the basis of his crusade
is emotional in origin. It is not
the Stockholm Syndrome but
Tzirel Friedman the Jewish Self-Hatred
Chaya Leah Blitz Phenomenon that accounts for
his behavior....

In response to the letter (Dec.
20) accusing us of lack of Derech
Eretz we have this to say:
It was never our intention to-
attack or in any way downgrade
the personality of Rabbi Syme.
The issue was and is the accu-
racy of his statement made re-
garding the image that we have
of our great ancestor, Jacob. We
feel that as students of Torah
we have a right to speak up
when a comment is made con-
trary to the beliefs that we have,
been raised in. This is the only
issue that is important here.
Your newspaper is presented
to the Greater Detroit Jewish
community which includes those
who firmly believe in the Torah
both written and oral. Any
commentator who puts aside the
statements made by the Talmud
(oral Torah) and its spokesman
— Rashi — is unacceptable to
us as a commentator.
- We have the greatest Derech
Eretz for the person who wrote
this article, but we disagree
with its contents, because it is
opposed to what we believe in
and have been taught in our
Chumash lessons in school.

Analysis Of
Jerry Levin

The "close-up" of ex-hostage
Jerry Levin in The Detroit
Jewish News (Dec. 6) makes one
wonder what motivates his
pro-Arab crusade. Is he just
misguided, or a fanatic exploit-
ing a humanitarian cause?
While the Jewish media pre-
sents all aspects relating to Is-
rael, it is surprising to feature
the views of a man who at best
is meddling in areas beyond his
intellectual grasp and compe-
tence and doing harm to the
image and security of Israel.
In his comments, Jerry Levin
fails to comprehend the differ-
ence between negotiating as
equals or with your opponent
holding a gun to your head and
sworn to your ultimate destruc-
tion. He also ignores that the
inevitable result of concession is
more blackmail.
He further claims that an
"even-handed Near East policy"
would remove the basis of kid-
napping. This is totally false, as
Frank Gervasi of the Center for
International Security lists the
names of nearly 20 correspon-
dents who were threatened, kid-
napped, or murdered during
several years prior to 1982 in
intra-Arab conflicts.
The other consideration is
that "even-handedness" is a
struggle of three to four million
Israelis against 100 million hos-
tile Arabs determined to push
the Israelis into the sea is
neither fair nor "even-handed."
To understand Jerry Levin
and his wife "Sis" we note their
own statements. He admits that
his opinon about the Arab-Israel
conflict changed prior to his cap-
tivity. It is safe to assume that.
his pro-Arab stance was trans-
mitted to his captors and he was

Seven-Branch
Chanukkiyah

I,• the grand prize winner of
The Jewish News Chanukah Art
Contest, would like to answer
the criticism that David Alspec-
tor made of my art work in the
Dec. 20 issue.
David Alspector is mistaken
to believe that Judah the Mac-
cabee lit the chanukkiyah with
nine branches when he liberated
the Bais Hamikdash (the Tem-
ple). Judah instead lit the
seven-branch menorah — the
Ner Tamid — when he disco-
vered the one remaining vessel
of oil. It was not until hundreds
of years later during the Middle
Ages that the Chanukkiyah was
created. So my art work did
show the correct menorah.
I am grateful for the Hebrew
day school education that I am
• receiving and I would hope that
all Jews continue to study and
learn all they , can about their
Jewish heritage.
