Israel Colleges

Continued from Page 37

Tel Aviv, the Tel Aviv Uni-
rversity was close to
museums, theater's, shopping
centers, discotheques,
nightclubs, and - beaches.
Though• we chased after
departing buses many times,
public transportation was
excellent.
Housing was provided for
our group in the campus dor-
mitories. For the Americans
especially, the atmosphere
was extremely interesting;
many of the residents were
new immigrants to Israel
from France, Russia, even
Ethiopia.
Entering my dormitory
room after I arrived at, the
university, I suddenly saw a
white sheet rising from the
floor near my bed. I shrieked,
only to see the white sheet
rise further, and a brown face
appear from underneath.
Thus, I met my roommate,
Rola Mansour, an Arab and
devout Moslem/ from Kfar
Tayiba near Netanya.
Five times a day Rola
. washed her feet and prayed,
bowing, with a sheet over her.
From Rola, I learned a nur-
sery rhyme in Arabic, a recipe
for felafel, and five of Allah's
many names. Even more sig-
nificantly, we gained from
each other a new understand-
. ing of tolerance.
Tel Aviv University does
not have a special meal plan.
However, inexpensive cafe-
terias are located throughout
the campus. Our dorm suites
. had kitchen facilities, in-
cluding a refrigerator and a
hotplate. After shopping at
the nearby supermarket, we
learned to prepare humus,
eggplant salad, shakshuka,
and other Israeli favorites.
We alWays kept a ready sup-
ply of peanut butter, and one
student even received a spe-
cial delivery airmail package
from her concerned parents
-- with 12 cans of tuna-in-
water.
Suddenly thrust into a new
environment, we learned to
adjust to Israel's volatile liv-
ing conditions. When I ar-
rived in lintel, the dollar was
worth approximately 200
shekels; before I left, it was
700 skekels to the dollar. En-
tering Israeli supermarkets
with no prices posted because
' of . the too-rapid change in
money value and purchasing
Israeli newspapers to deter-
mine the exact worth of our
dollars were certainly inter-
esting experiences.
Many of the students had
not realized before their ar-
rival that Israel is a modern
country. I myself lugged
from the Unites} States a gal-
, Ion of distilled water for my
contact lenses, only to find it
sold in. every Israeli drug-
store.
Some of us arrived in Israel
with a concern about person-
al safety. Indeed, we did stare
at khaki-clad Israeli soldiers
carrying their weapons on the

,

streets, a sight to which we
quickly adjusted. And Israeli
students were amazed to hear
that women at the Universi-
ty of Maryland need an es-
cort service to walk them
from their dormitories the
library at night. At Tel viv
University I felt safe w
alone.
The cost of the Tel A
University program, inciu
ing round-trip airfare, tuitio
dormitory accommodation
food, touring, and miscellan-
eous expenses, is approxi-
mately $4,200. Scholarship
aid is available.
Returning to the United
States was for me a dramatic
event. I had to become famil-
iar once again with solid dol-
lars instead of drowning she-
kels, streets without hitch-
hiking soldiers, and super-
markets• without pita bread.
But I am certain never to for-
get my tune spent studying
in Israel.
