Jerusalem (JTA) — Bereaved
parents of soldiers killed in the
Lebanon war are continuing to
demand a full scale inquiry into
the war. Premier Shimon Peres,
who himself once urged such an
inquiry, believes it would be im-
practical to try to conduct one
under present circumstances.
That was the gist of his reply to
Ephrat Spiegel, mother of a fallen
soldier, Yoav Spiegel. The family
recently returned to Peres a cer-
tificate of recognition of gallant
service which the army sent post-
humously.
"I know that my answer will not
satisfy you, but who of us can
argue with a family which has lost
their dearest one," Peres wrote.
He explained that there is no
practical chance at this time to
form a committee to inquire into
the war, regardless of his personal
views on the issue.
The Spiegel family recalled last
week that Peres, when he headed
the opposition in parliament, had
demanded an inquiry. He sub-
sequently received a mandate
from his voters to change the

demand an investigation of the

Meanwhile, a Shiite Moslem
group in Lebanon has threatened
to murder four Beirut Jews they
kidnapped several months ago
unless Israel frees 300 Shiites the
group claims are being held pris-
oner in south Lebanon. Issrael
Radio, quoting Beirut newspapers
last Tuesday, identified the
Jewish hostages as Isaac Sasson,
Isaac Tarab, Eli Tsrir and Haim
Cohen Hallalah.
Newark, N. J. (JTA) — An
Egyptian-born travel agency
owner living in Jersey City was
arrested there by U.S. customs
agents last Wednesday on charges
of conspiring to smuggle 150
pounds of explosives to a member
of the PLO in the West Bank.
The suspect, Sultan Ibrahim El
Gawli, a 47-year old naturalized
U.S. citizen and owner of the Sul-
tan Travel Agency, was arraigned
in Federal Court last week on
charges of murder for hire, deal-
ing in explosives, exportation
without a license, and the conspi-
racy charges, according to a U.S.
customs spokesperson, Michael
Kaufman.
Kaufman said that Gawli at-
tempted to buy 150 pounds of C-4
explosives, produced in the Un-
ited States for military purposes,
plus 100 blasting caps and remote
electrical detonating devices with
a 500-yard range for $25,000, and
a gun with a silencer for $1,500.
A co-conspirator planned to put
the explosives and gun in his lug-
gage, take them on a flight out of
the U.S. and then smuggle them
to the West Bank and deliver
them to another conspirator who
"represented himself as a PLO
representative," Kaufman said.
The goods, he added, did not
change hands, however.
