JESNA Studies
Teacher Supply

New York — In an effort to ad-
dress the personnel shortage in
Jewish schools, the Jewish Edu-
cation Service of North America,
Inc., has announced a series of
studies regarding "Teacher Re-
cruitment Strategies for
Supplementary Schools."
Some schools, JESNA reports,
have achieved a measure of prog-
ress by professionalizing the field
— raising salaries and providing
sufficient hours and benefit pac-
kages to make teaching a viable
career option. Others have au-
gmented their staffs with volun-
teers, part-time teachers and re-
tirees in an effort to provide capa-
ble, knowledgeable and exciting
personnel.
JESNA will study the experi-
ences of selected supplementary
schools, nation-wide, which have
experimented with a variety of
sources for obtaining qualified
teachers; examine the recruit-
ment practices and degrees of suc-
cess of other religious groups'
supplementary schools, as well as
of schools in the public sector for

The JESNA project will also

Philly Gets New
Jewish Campus

Philadelphia (JTA) — The Fed-
eration of Jewish Agencies ac-
quired the site of a former
academy in the Melrose Park
area, clearing the way to imple-
ment a self-contained Jewish edu-
cational campus, according to
Bennett Aaron, federation presi-
dent.
Named the Mandell Educa-
tional Campus in honor of the late
Samuel and Ida Mandell, the
complex will be the new home of
Gratz College Hebrew High
School; the Forman Center of the
Solomon Schechter Day School;
and a branch of Federation day
care services.
Aaron said that future plans for
the site include the possible de-
velopment of a full-time middle
and high school.
Gratz College also is exploring
the feasibility of building a new
library on the campus, Aaron
said. This would be in accordance
with the intentions of the college
to relocate all of its operations at
the new site, he said.

Present to Bush

Washington (JTA) — A newly
published five-volume History of
the Jewish People has been pre-
sented to Vice President George
Bush by the B'nai B'rith Interna-
tional Commission on Adult
Jewish Education.
