an internalized sense of belong-

Parents who are in touch with
their ethnic and religious roots
tend to cope relatively suc-
cessfully with the problems of
raising children in today's "me
generation" society. This was
the consensus of a panel of ex-
perts who heard a report on a
two-year pilot study and re-
viewed a videotape presentation
titled "Parents and Ethnicity"
released recently by the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee.
The half-hour film, which is
based on a study of cross-
cultural parenting styles in
suburban communities in the
New York area, was produced
by social psychologist Lori L.
Santo, the project director. It
portrays parents of Black, Ita-
lian, Jewish, Irish and Hispanic
backgrounds trying to deal with
what the author has termed
"parental identity". According to
Mrs. Santo, "parental identity"
defines a process of parental
functioning that attempts to
integrate ethnic and religious
background with contemporary
life style.
Some of the major findings
highlighted in Mrs. Santo's
summary report, "Parental
Identity: Harmonizing Ethnic
Traditions and Contemporary
Values," and depicted in the
film, are:

• Parents bring particular
cultural styles to their child-
rearing methods, even when
they are unaware of this. While
these styles do change over gen-
erations, certain • traceable
ethnic themes persist among the
different groups studied.
• The transition into par-
enthood was much easier and
more automatic for members of
closely knit, extended family
networks. As couples moved to
the suburbs, however, they had
to consciously create new social
networks.
Parenting styles and values
taken for granted in close-knit
communities were called into
question and required re-
evaluation as lifestyles changed.
The frame of reference for chil-
drearing decisions tended to
shift from what was handed
down by parents to peer-group
values, the advice of experts,
and current life experiences.
